mr2 gearboxes

Postby thornz » Wed Sep 15, 2004 9:24 pm

test drove a mr2 today, nice car, inside and out. the only problem wa the gearbox, the synchros on third were completely f****d!! is this a common problem with them?? the car is meant to only have travelled 105kms, which seems abit early to have rooted synchros. also is a expensive problem to fix, any1 had it done b4? cheers

Mk1 or Mk2 MR2? Not sure about the newer ones but a recondition for my old car cost about $1000, or you can get a second hand gbox for about $300 and pay up to $300 for installation.

My car had the exact problem when I bought it, 2nd gear was fine but 3rd was absolutely shot. Ended up getting a new gearbox, but would probably have been just as cheap to repair.

I bought mine with 130k kms on the clock and now has near 170k and haven't had he problem.
Looks like a sign of thrashing to me....
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

130kms? that's pratically a new car!

2nd hand gearboxes goes for abuot $600+ depending on with LSD or not. Cheaper to replace than rebuild. And no it's not a common problem, at least to the 93+
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Ok Ive noticed from a few I driven that 2nd is the most prone to damage..

I think a lot of it comes down to seating position IMO, if you sit too far forward its hard to get the car into second, try it and youll see, this means even the oldest granny driver ever will grind 2nd till theres nothing left.

Any of you with an mr2 can try this, theres just no elbowroom to throw it back into 2nd...

my opinion anyway :D

You must be talking about SW20's, us AW11 folk don't even need to move our arms to change gear, the shifter is that short.

My mums car has bad synchros from 1-3. A lot of people have told me its because of japanese traffic (bumper to bumper).

Obviously this only applies to imports.
