Just changed my Cambelt on my BZ-G, now clutch slips

Postby Graphite » Mon Sep 20, 2004 10:36 am

Just changed my Cambelt on my Toyota Levin BZ-G, took me about 2 hours, had no problems doing that, 1st one i've done.
But now my clutch is slipping, which is strange considering the clutch has nothing to do with the cambelt.
Maybe my cars running a bit better and put more strain on it? any ideas anyone.

Don't want to start a 10 page thread but I have seen vehicles that have lost power due to the cambelt stretching or loosening and having an effect on the cam timing! Although I don't believe this will be his problem, i would say just the way life goes!!

The only way that would happen, is if the cambelt slipped a tooth, which is not totally uncommon. But stretching/loosening? No.

Tensioner gone maybe? Not completely gone, but gone far enough to let it loose?

1st of all, is it an ae111? or 101, coz the blacktops have hydrolic tentioners i believe. Was there leaks arounds the tensioner when u replaced the belt? DID u replace the tensioner? if not there could be a pressure loss in the tensioner to cause "looseness" or even slipping of teeth.

u MAY even have low oil pressure throughout ure whole system... due to a leak...

I'm guessing I may have stumbled across a possibility then?

Well you must have no idea what you are talking about! Cambelts become loose, slackness between pulleys which will hurt performance, only a little but it does happen! Stretching causes the same problem, it not only plays with your cam timing but with you ignition timing as well.

i agree with the become loose
and i agree with the fact they do sometimes need periodic matainace
btu if you look after your car properly it sould never be a issue
we did a strech test on a cambelt at uni we got just over 1mm of strech over the entire belt before it broke
in the real world 1mm wouldnt even cover the backlash in the cam drive gear
and would not even change the cam timing as much as a good skimm of the head

maybee your thinking of timming chains ??

just my thoughts

Over a period of time a belt will stretch, a bench test will not give you the same result as a vehicle that has done 80+,000k's. But as you say, this causes very little slackness and will not have much effect. But yeah loose belts can cause power changes. 8) :D
