Uneven Acceleration

Postby Just_Juzz » Fri Sep 24, 2004 8:40 am

My car has been worrying me a little as of late.

When accelerating the revs seem to get high, then drop down again, then climb again.

Sometimes the revs seem to stay constant, but the car keeps accelerating.

I have no idea what it could be, throttle not opening properly?

Any thoughts?

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, as the clutch is on it's last legs, but my girlfriends old man is a mechanic, and he said the clutch isn't bad enough to be slippin at the moment....

But I might get him to check it again.

How high are we talking? and how mashed into the floor is your pedal?

If the revs stay constant and you're still accellarating, try changing out of 2 and into D. :P

have you checked the plugs recently?

those engines have vvt don't they? I'm not sure...

um, this isnt being an arsehole, but its not an auto is it?
because automatics concentrate rpm at the max torque... to push the car foward without using more petrol than required....

as the clutch is on it's last legs,

Yes.... it is a manual.

The plugs are new.

It does it when accelerating from around 2K up.

IE

Put my foot down on the accelerator, in say 3rd or 4th, revs go up to like 4k then drop down again then accelerate up.

Also, accelerating, the revs stay constant, but it accelerates. It is weird.

I thought maybe the throttle isn't opening properly. But cant be sure.

I know the clutch is on the way out.

The revs cant stay the same and have you accelerating. For the gearbox to be turning faster there needs to be something driving it faster (ie the engine) and since they are mechanically linked (bar the clutch) you cant really accelerate with constant engine revs.

I'd be changing the clutch now if its on its last legs and see if you still have the problem

IMHO you should cut out your known issues (i.e. your clutch), because there are cases where they will influence the behaviour of something else.
