high beam issue

Postby Caveman » Sun Oct 03, 2004 12:34 pm

Hi

My high beam on my st162 seems to be playing up. It works when you put it into pass (pull it back) but when you flick it forward to lock it there is no light. The dip light works, park light, etc. everything works except the high beam on lock. It does lock into place but there is no light. I'm thinking a broken switch. any ideas?

Yea, it sounds like the switch alright. Take off the surround and have a looksie to see if a contact has just bent or maybe broken off

someone will probably correct me , but.

isn't the lighting circuits in Toyotas earthed back through the dash, meaning if the high beam indicator on the dash has blown, the circuit won't be complete?

i'm sure it works that way with the 70 series anyway, as i had a prick of a time lightening my loom as i didn't have the dash lights wired in and the high beam wouldn't work.

I had the same problem in my MR2 I would put on the good old High beams and the all of a sudden I was in darkness flick it back and hey presto low beams again. I just kept flicking them over and they seemed to fix them selves, dirty relay I guess not sure if it is any help but it worked for me

Only thing with that is that 1998's dip still works. On my cars at least this also does the indicator light so i dont think it will be that.

Ok i've tested the switch by isolating the headlight wire from the steering wheel loom and it the switch is working on both settings. Im thinking a relay, so i opened the fuse box and found one labeled as 'head', is this the one? Or is it somewhere else? Im going to start testing the wire, does anyone know is the pass and hold have different wires?
