Just curious to whether a 1uz-fe would cause chronic axel breakage or not. 4wd have anything to do with it?

Fuel consumption I am guessing wouldnt have helped by being and older carby engine and bigger engine capacity.

My next question would be brakes dont think the standard hilux ones would be sufficient is there any rotors, calipers or even hubs I could swap over from another toyota to help out in stopping the beast? I think I would like to look at having disc brakes all round. And maybe twin piston calipers up front or even all round.

My Surf was 4wd, and I used it a couple of times off road. Most of the axle breakage was abuse ie Launching at 3000rpm with 31x10.5R15 tyres etc. The engine was stock, just a 4 barrel carb, hence the fuel usage and flames. And 2200kg of iron to shift.
As for brakes, if you are going 4WD, the 4 piston front calipers are plenty sufficient, esp with metallic pads. I passed the braking test at 130kph, when it's supposed to be done at 100kph (speedo was way out with the tyres)
Have fun and let me have a drive when you've finished!

So the front calipers off a surf are 4 piston? im guessing the same off the 4wd hilux's ?

Sounds like a good idea, will look into discs all round aswell though.

Aslo anyone know what sort of milage You would get out of a pretty much stock 1uz-fe in a 2wd hilux? or even what sort of milage a soarer or ls400 or crown makes? and what sort of weights are they? to compare weight to fuel economy.
