Ignition timing curve for a 4agte.

Postby terrytuffguy » Tue Oct 12, 2004 5:30 pm

What is a good timing curve for a turboed 4agze setup? I know there are alot of variables with setting your timming. But I need a basic curve so I can have something to work with......cheers

20 degrees under boost.
you can start with 20degs static timing....and go up to 35 under low load, and you shouldn't need to go any lower.... 10 degrees for starting would be nicer too.

Yea I had mine going from 35degrees under no load at 6000rpm to 25-30degrees under 10psi which caused it to detonate.

Is it true how you have to get your fuel mixtures right first otherwise you would be chasing your own tail? It's quite hard as I think I may be running to rich which I think is killing my power....

my timing is at 20degrees on boost @15psi.
this seems to be a safe value and is what most of the 4agte boys run at.
my mixtures are also richer than normal but meh longer lasting engine.

It's damn hard to get your fuel mixtures right on the street, I have a fuel mixture guage but it doesn't work that well.

Also what about the no load ignition curve, right from idle right up to the rev cut?

Microtech............Are you idling on 18 degrees? Just curious to know how fast the car advances verus the RPM. I know you have to retard the timming around max torque and then advance it again at the higher rpm.

My car has a LEM V3 and you have a V4 whigh has more rows in it,
so the program in my car will not be compatable with yours.

Also my car runs 100% avgas all the time and has water injection to help control detonation.

And 7.9:1 compression ratio helps too.

All I will say is it runs a fair but more than 20 degrees at 20psi.

if you're running av and 7.9:1 then for sure you're going to be able to run more timing.
i was running 10.3:1 and 15 lbs, and didn't want to tempt deto.
with 9:1 or so, 25 degrees should be ok.

too much advance is one of the quickest ways to blow up a motor.

Exactly,
so the program in my car would be of no use.
The other program I have was a road car that ran on 96 so it has a much safer program. It has about 20 deg.

Interestingly too much ign advance can actually cause rund bearings in the bottom of the motor.
