Thicker head gaskets for 4age?

Postby ChaosAD » Fri Oct 22, 2004 7:25 pm

Does anyone know if there is a thicker than standard headgasket available for the 16v 4age?preferably about 1.5mm and metal (had bad experiences with copper ones, and carbon ones leave heaps of shit stuck to the block)

Idea: get a 4age gasket and make a cnc file of it, take it to a fabrication shop to laser cut from whatever material and thickness you desire. There are a few places around who could manage that, they often make runs of rare and extinct head gasket designs. It may work out the same price for one as it would for 5 or 10 I could imagine since the setup cost is most of the cost. But hey doesn't hurt to have a few spares. Maybe others will want the same thing too?

There are thicker ones available from the likes of Cometic etc, but these are usually made by adding another layer or two to there multi layer steel gaskets taking them out to 5 or 6 layers, still have yet to see one of these fail as usually the head/block or head studs/bolts fail first. Thicker ones whould probably be listed as 4AGZE ones I guess been a while sinced I had to get one. forget copper etc, multi layer laminated steel gaskets are thebest way to go. My suggestions for a source would be to try Lyn Rogers first as they may have them in stock or may be able to point you in the right direction. If not try either Pioneer's or Segedins I'm sure one of them is the Cometic agent here. Else if not ring someone like HiTech Motorsports in Pukekohe as they do a bit of 4age stuff & bring in plenty of Toda/Jun stuff plus stock hepas of head gaksets & have previosuly been able to get multilayer gaskets made for custom stuff.

gaskets unlimited in auckland makes a composite type..... but it's not reusable forever.

if you decomp with a gasket it will use more fuel to make the same power, and it won't make the same power........ so in other words, it will use more fuel and make less power....

our dyno graphs on our site show this.

Karls spot on...

Dont use one to decomp, seems to f**k up all the squish characteristics & combustion efficiency in 4AGE's.

Stay standard/lowish boost or drop in some pistons.

Thanks guys, the reason I want a thicker headgasket is cos the pistons I want to use have a cr of 10.7:1 std or 11.7:1 when you deck the block to 0.030" piston to head clearance.
I just wanted to deck the block to 11.7: 1 then bring it back down to 10.7:1 with a thicker headgasket.
That way, if I want more compression later on I can just change the gasket instead of stripping the block down so I can deck it.

hmm... you should be able to run 11.7:1 on pump gas, as long as not too much advance anyways....

gary's running 12.7:1 with a 10:1 ratio of pump:av IIRC.
