SW20 Power windows wiring questions.

Postby RomanV » Mon Nov 15, 2004 3:21 pm

Hi there. :)

Basically, my drivers side door in my MR2 is pretty poked. A while back, I replaced the window winder bracket, and the control panel. (cheers nemesis for the cheap bits 8) )

However, since then, my control panel has crapped itself, and the mounts on the door have broken, leaving my door pretty poked. Which means my windows arent working.

This wouldnt be too much of a problem, if it wasnt for the fact that I have no aircon, and summer is here :(

Theoretically, there is nothing wrong with my passenger side window. However, without the driver side control panel working, It doesnt work.

I would imagine that the 'window lock' button on the drivers control panel works by breaking the circuit to the power for the other window?
So what I am wondering is, is it possible to bypass the control panel? Like.. Is there two wires that I could unplug from the controller, and solder together to bypass this?

Basically I just want to be able to operate the passenger side window until I can get a whole new door. :)

Any help much appreciated. 8)

The stock wiring is pretty complicated but it's relatively straightforward (but time consuming) to completely rewire the motors. Basically you need to identify the 2 wires coming from the winder motor and hook them up to a centre-off 2 way momentary switch like this:

Hook the 2 motor wires up to the 2 centre pins and hook up power and earth at each end with the polarity reversed on one. Like this:

P E

M M

E P

Make sure you use a reasonably grunty power source, don't hook it up to the ciggy lighter :D.

the wy the switches work even if you bypass the window lock sw the pass. window will still not work as the pass side switch alsom earths through the contacts in the main control panel.

A bit more of a complicated rewire is required.
