Bleedin' ABS

Postby Perky » Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:22 pm

Hi all,

I want to change the brake fluid in my Curren but I've never flushed an ABS system. I see that when this topic has come up before, a link was posted that says that the ABS reservoir can only be flushed by using an electronic doodacky to cycle the ABS. Other advice has suggested that the ABS reservoir can be bled directly or that bleeding from the calipers will replace all the fluid. I imagine that different cars have different needs but the Haynes manual has only a schematic diagram that isn't very helpful. Does anybody know whether ABS on these cars (Curren/6th gen Celica) prevents full DIY flushing, or will it be ok?

And if anyone knows that, can they also give me some idea of how much fluid will be required for a full flush.

thanks,
Russell

just bleed them as you would bleed non ABS, just the pedal will have more resistance in going to the floor.

just pump it through the calipers, and new fluid will replace old fluid when you keep topping up the resovior.

apparently your spose to bleed abs with the engine running, but the guys at toyota just do it like any other system anyway

I think most abs systems keep brake fluid in them and they only open up to the rest of the system when the abs is activated.

therefore if you bleed your brakes like normal you should not have any problems, but you are not totally bleeding the system as next time the abs is used it will pump the old fluid thats been sitting in it out into the rest of the system.

So to be sure of clearing the system bleed it like normal then go out driving and set off the abs a few times then go home and bleed again.

or you can use the electronic doodaky which turns on the abs while you flush the system
