changed alternator now car runs crap (when it goes)

Postby scope » Mon Nov 22, 2004 2:36 pm

hey

i recently bought a 2-door ke70 wagon. when i first got it i drove it around for about 2hours with the battery light on (thinking the alternator would be charging the bat, so i ignored it). a few days later i got in the car and it just went 'click' as i was starting it.. i figured the alternator or battery must be rooted. so i went and bought a new alternator yesterday and me and a few mates put it in and jump started it. it's a mission to get it started, it will just sit there with the starter motor going and nothing happening but if i pump the gas a little bit it sometimes starts. when its going though it sounds like it is going to cut out every 10 seconds (didn't do this when first got it), sounds like a rotor, shakes the whole car like nuts and the battery light is still on

what is the reason for this? is the belt not tight enough? or was the alternator not the problem?

and the battery light, does that turn on if the bat is flat, or its not being charged?

any help would be appreciated, thanks

You could check the voltage while the car is running. Should be higher than when it's not. i.e 12v not running 14v running. This will tell you if the alternator is working. The shuddering etc may be HT leads/spark plugs/dizzy? maybe not running on 4 cylinders all the time. If the battery is dead flat then it is probably dead. swap that as well.
Check fuel filter also... good luck.

Opps... also if the car was running ok before changing the alternater then maybe one of your connections is loose or dirty on the alternater. Might want to check those also.

hey i just went and checked and i found a loose one on the back on the alternator so i tightened it. then i tried starting it and it was doing the whole jumping like crazy but then i rev it and it starts feeling normal again but once i stop reving it starts to shake a little, then a little more and so on and then it started making clicking sounds so i turned it off :p

i'll check those other things you said tomorrow

Is it a new alternator? If not could be a problem with the second hand one.

Leave it a while to charge the battery... Once its charged it should stop charging and run normal. While charging they usually make a noise and slow the engine a lot at idle. Is there water in the battery?

Maybe you've missed a grove on the belt i.e gone 1 to far or 1 to short.

You could also change the rotor and distributor cap. Also try leads out of another car.

Fuel could be an issue. Check the pump over a minute. I had a faulty pump which would go perfect for about 20 seconds and then slow down to an irregular pressure.
