can I re-use TOYOTA torque to yeild head bolts

I have decided to change the gasket on my rebuilt as the gasket I fitted to it gives too much compression.
. However it has already been torqued to spec but the engine has never been run.

Can I reuse the bolts (which are new genuine ones) or do I need to replace them?
Kind of confusing cos when you do the valve clearance checks the gaskets supposed torqued down

yes u can reuse them if they are still within spec

I re-used some original head bolts on my 4age which was stock and never had a problem, however in a boosted application I probably wouldn't reccomend it.

Thanks. By 'within specs' do you mean the length of the bolt?
And if they are within specs, do I do the normal torque + 90deg + 90deg?

yup its length.

you should never re-use torque to yield haed bolts, once there stretched they will NOT torque to the correct settings. specially in a boosted setup i wouldn't even consider it :S:S

wouldn't use them again either. They WILL NOT reach the same even torque as they will when new. This will cause uneven clamping pressure across your head and if it's too far out you will spit the headgasket.

as listed in the toyota 4age manual
exhaust side bolts should be 90mm and inlet side 108mm
thats an EXACT measurement.
for headbolts id go with that. for rod bolts id replace them with ARP ones, they are cheap enough.
of course it will depend on the applictaion... if youv just spent mega $$ on ya race engine then every little bit of insurance is worth it!

I've never & probably will never re-use it's not like they are mega $$$ for new ones compared to the cost of a failure. I'm even of the same opinion with ARP head bolts/studs in some engines, cheaper to replace them even if they measure ok, still keep an old set round for dummy assembly though. Most OEM head studs/bolts & main/big end bolts/studs/nuts are generally of the use once type so even if they measure alright shouldn't be used again. On a side note I have seen even brand new never used before ARP head studs/bolts fail when installed correctly, race motor for sure but still ony 10:1 compression.

Ive had so much greif with leaky head gaskets (do not use a copper head gasket without 'oringing' the head or block even if your told its unneccesary) and this engine in general.

I think I might get some new bolts just for piece of mind.

who told you you dont have to O-ring a block for copper gaskets!!!

you should ALWAYS o-ring a block when doing that.
