spots not working.....edit:problem fixed

Postby AJz » Mon Feb 14, 2005 2:28 pm

I recently installed spots into my car about a week ago, now since blowing the "dome fuse"(which has been replaced, they dont go.)

By using a multimeter, i have traced right from the ignition, and positive source, through the relay, which i replaced aswell, still having a postive feed all the way down to where the lights are mounted. I have taken the spots off the car and tested to see if the bulb has been blown, nope still creates a circuit.and the ground from the lights is good. So now, after much frustration, i cant figure out why the hell it aint working.

any help would be much appreciated.

This exact thing happened to me once on a Familia...

Rather than try and fix it I just removed the spotlights, they look stupid anyway...

Hope that helps...

run a 12 v supply directly from your battery to your bulbs through a fuse (obviously)...... both foggies could just be fuked (bad batch?).

when i did it in my gfs car, i just hooked all the nessecary items up.. and she worked fine.

is the relay earthed like it should be? is your switch working etc? basically, are you SURE you have wired it up correctly?

When the vehicle is running, test the voltage coming out at bulb connection points, it should be 14.4v, if it's around 12.4v, then you have a problem in your relay/wiring, whatever.

Hmm, this all depends on your wiring...
If you could bodgy something together as a wiring diagram would help...

But based on what i've read... I would guess that the relay isn't switching.

Best test. Put the multimeter on continuity test and connect across Normally Open contacts of relay. Connect coil wires, one to battery and one to ground. If relay clicks and meter buzzes then relay is fine.
Next reconnect the coil wires to your wiring, but leave meter attached to N/O contacts. Turn on the stuff that should turn on the lights, buzz means fine, no buzz means stuffed.
If there is a buzz then the power feed to the lights has a bad connection.
If there is no buzz then the activation circuit you've wired is faulty.

Next question. Why did the dome light fuse blow? Sure it didn't fry again as soon as you replaced it? My second guess is that you inadvertently wired the dome light connection either to ground, or directly to the lights. Either through this circuit or something else you changed. Did you install anything else recently... A headunit perhaps?

I don't claim to know everything... That doesn't mean it isn't true....

Where is your positive feed coming from? The lights could draw anywhere up to 10 amps (assuming they're 55W bulbs). If you've taken your positive feed for the lights themselves from wiring in the dash thats on the dome curcuit then you could be drawing too much current and blowing fuses

2, one of the lights is dodgy, connections to the light is fuked, so will take back tomorrow and see if i can sort that out. Other than that they work properly now,

update:

was nothing wrong with light, just had bad grounding, wired up to ground of other spot, works good.

......for about 30 seconds, blew the fuse again, and then i figured out wat had been causing the problem the whole time was i forgot i had taken the feed that my headunit was using, DER. which is the "dome" fuse, so my headunit, dash, fogs etc, were running off the same 20A fuse, whoops, didnt know they drew that much current.

Looks like a bit of proper wiring will have to be done tomorrow. lol. glad i dont have work tomorrow.

why were you running positive directly off your.... headunit feed X_X

run it directly from the battery!

and i remember someone saying the earths were good :P
