Need help with Trumpet pipe and Air intake

Postby solberg Fan » Tue Feb 15, 2005 11:02 am

Hey people, :)
Ive been looking for some kind of 3" flexi pipe for my intake. I have no idea where to look and no one ive talked to knows where to get it from. - some one on here must know.
Also im trying to make some trumpets for my 40mm carbs but again, i cant find any 40mm ID pipe. Brass or plastic seems to be made in 38mm for some anoying reason. :?
If some one can fix my problem.... YIIIPPPPPPEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Hey man, i looked high and low for some sort of flexi for my AE111 blacktop intake, the only thing i could get which would do the job without melting and was stiff enough at high temps was a bit of Samco 76mm silicon hose, fricken expensive but its damn good stuff, i think i payed about $60ish for a 100mm piece 8O

get your exhaust shop to flare some 38mm tube then bell the ends. make them out of aluminium ot stainless so they don't rust like my mild steel ones.

get the exhaust shop to flare the 38mm tube to 40mm. it's no different to them making a slip-joint in an exhaust.

I remember a while back Mr Oizo (spelling?) saying that irrigation places sell the flexi ducting, so you might wanna PM him and find out. Then when ya find out, PM me and tell me where you got it from! :D

Surely there is a demand for this stuff, you'd think Ripco would stock it or something

this flexi pipe you speak of, how flexible does it need to be?

aesc has raised a valid point, the hoses on the 2 vaccum trucks at work vary from 3" to 6" but will only bend in a slow radius.

i have 4" flexible ducting on my woodworking gear that bends a lot tighter and i think it may also be available down to 2"/3".

Ive sent a PM and will let you know.

It dosnt need to be that flexable, i could use a drain pipe 90 degree bend where i need it.(a bit ugly tho..or even take a rubber bend of another car)

My IE is playing up so i'll just make a reply in here.

The place i got the stuff from was HCD (Hose and Couplings Distributors),

if you're in auckland there is one on Nielson St, Onehunga.

I'ld get their number too but whitepages dont seem to be working for me either :/

For me it wouldnt need to be very flexible. Like Solberg said, could use some downpipe bends if needed

Solberg Fan, that would be good if you could let me know, perhaps send me pics and prices if you get them.

MrOizo, what size ducting did you get? Ideally im after some 2.5' but yeah 3' would be ok.

This is a slightly cheaper option if you can find it and assuming it won't be under pressure or vacuum (ie just directing cold air to your airfilter).
On a friends WRX we used Mk2 Cortina dash vent hoses with are 3 inch diameter. You can also wind them together to make longer lengths, basically just coiled wire with a plastic covering. I would expect you could adapt similar tubing from other cars, although I have seen very few that use 3 inch tubing.

Ok people have managed to track down some 2.5' and 3' ducting through HCD. Their website is www.hoseandcoupling.co.nz and they have offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The guy is getting back to me with a quote for ducting that will suit application for intakes, will post them up once I find out.

Ok have received a reply from HCD.

The ducting is called 'Liteflex', sounds like its a plastic type ducting rather than rubber.

2.5' $18.60 per metre + GST
3.0' $20.00 per metre + GST

Not too badly priced. Might have to go in on Sat morning and get me some :D

I got mine from Drainworld (BRO!). 2 1/2", its like that black ribbed stuff but the inside has a rubbery glue stuff on it to fill in the ribs to give it a smooth bore. 1m cost me $6 plus a roll of aluminium tape for heat shielding $5 and a free piece of rubber hose about 100mm long to join it to the throttle body and a couple of hose clamps $4. $15 CAI

cheers for the info aesc.
How flexible if flexible? Im slowly rigging up a cold air feed, coming from slightly cutting the front valance, and having a steel mesh with tube fitting etc. But there is little width space in between the bumper and the subframe to the bay. like maybe 25cm?

just wanna know how much it bends really :)
