Bang for buck (4age)

Postby ee904age » Thu Feb 17, 2005 7:48 pm

1st, maybe this should be in tech but im more after opinions that tech advice so mods, feel free to move.

I have just brought a second bluetop 4AG. This will be a long term project as I have no REAL NEED for it yet and no decent car to put it in.

In any knowledgeable persons mind, what option will give the best "bang for buck" between keeping N/A or turbocharging.

I will be doing most of the general work myself but if I go the N/A route, more specialised work such as head work etc will be done by friends in the trade.

Either way the engine will get a full rebuild.

Oh, and if you want to post "Go do a search", just hit the back button beforehand 'coz I dont wanna hear it.

Best bang for buck, N/A or turbo? What are you aiming for exactly, drag car, circuit etc...

Easiest power is obviously going to be turbo, possibly cheaper too depending on how you go about it

Opps, forgot to add. Primarily a circuit car with the odd drag meet. Will be road legal but not daily driven so driveability is not a HUGE issue.

Before you construct an engine for the odd circuit meet, you want to find out the regs. Most have a 1600 or 2000 ltr class, both of which you'll miss if you turbo the 4age.

Thats the kind of info Im looking for. So in theory it will probably be a more competetive car staying in 1600 NA classes than the equivalent turbo class for the $ spent.

ie: to compete against 1800cc and over turbo cars would require a much stronger/more worked/more $ spent 4AGTE than keeping NA and racing other 1600cc NA cars

I have no idea as to roundy rounders regs. I think the multiplication factor for forced compression is 1.7 x your engine capacity. But do some research, JOIN A MANZ CAR CLUB. Talk to members about what they would do, what works, what doesnt, even what events your going to attend.
If your thinking about doing club events then I'd stick with a stock standard engine and learn how to work the car properly. Invest in suspension, tyres.
For compeditive racing you'll easily spend 10k on your NA engine. I bought mine second hand for 4.5k and it needed a freshen, new intake.
Rally cars have a 1600na class as do off road racers. Go outside those regs and your forced into the class above.
In offroad racing if you go one cc over 1632 (I'm 1624) and you race against 3.0 ltr Porches and turbocharged V6's.

Multiplication factor for us "roundy rounder's " is 1.6

And no matter what class you run in you all end up on the track at the same time, so even though you may be the fastest in your 1600 class, you will still be one of the last to pass the finish line.

Really depends on what you want to do.
