Turbo options for ST185

Postby peas » Sun Feb 20, 2005 11:21 am

I have been thinking of upgrading the CT-26 as with the engine freshly rebuilt with a few more good bits in it the standard 8lb boost is feeling a little bit pathetic (these turbos are good for up to 14lb?? is this correct?). I have been told that the CT-20b bolts straight on to the manifold and is capable of running higher boost more efficiently, is this true and are there any other options that I shold be looking at that are on a sensible budget.

Al has had awesome results with a ct20b on his mr2 , which is the same generation of engine as ur st185.check his dyno run in general section to see his 189 rwkw dyno :P i looked at highflowing the ct26 when i had mine , and comparing it to results with the ct20b , if i still had my gt4 id go the ct20b .
the stock ct26 is ok up to 14psi , which i had mine running for a year so start with that , maybe a fuel cut defender and you're away. you really wanna toss the piddly ct26 in the bin as soon as possible

Yeah thats what I thought... whats the go on fitting the 20b? I have been told that its goin to bolt straight up with the exception of one stud! That just sounds way too easy to be true.

Whats your thoughts on front mounts? I mean running high boost you would prob want one to avoid detonation but surely a front mount will increase the lag.

Flange bolts up, it has one extra stud on the turbine housing to the downpipe. Not an issue if you use a downpipe.

You can use a ct20b on an st185 with the stock downpipe, or aftermarket, you can also use a ct26 on an st205 with either and yes the turbo bolts straight on, you just need to use the existing oil and water feeds from your ct26, finding one however is not easy.
The stock top mount IC is crap, if you must keep it at least put a fan on it, otherwise front mount and put up with the lag or go water-air off an RC

I have a fan on the intercooler but the shroud blocks a lot of air from entering the scoop... its a Davies Craig 10" one... do people just sand it down to a lower profile or something cos it fits near on perfect and the lower lip of the shroud sits in under the mesh frame nicely.
That said I think that my intercooler has a minor crack in it as one corner (near the entry point) seems to accumulate oily crap after a bit and its the only way that I can think it is gettin there.. so I spose I will take that as a sign that someone wants me to get a god dam front mount

Yes and possibly getting your valve cover HPC coated will stop a bit of the heat from pouring into your IC
Rinse your IC out with petrol to remove the oily buildup, it's prob just from your PCV system which gets sucked into the turbo via the pipe after your AFM, you could always install a catch can to get around this?
