best eng conversion for a ke30?

Postby mister two » Thu Feb 24, 2005 4:58 pm

Hi my brother is looking at doing an engine conversion in his ke30.
My mate had a 1600 mazda turb engine(out of bmfr) that he was gonna try and fit because he could get the engine cheap and it would be something a bit different, however he sold it a couple of days ago...

So now he needs another cheap(ish) option for a decent engine to chuck in.
(doesnt want a 5k or anything shit like that and probably something a bit better than a 4age)
I said a 12a due to bang for buck, no computer to worry about, ease of modification, resale value at the moment.
Other than that there is the 4agze? Are these any harder to fit than just a 4age? then there is the issue of what gearbox, t50, w55 etc...
3tgteu, but these are getting quite old now

so what is the best diff to use for a something like this?
Fuel system upgrades, brake upgrades, etc...

I have seen the page posted here about engine conversions to keXX cars but it is quite unspecific.

Are there any good sites that you guys can direct me to, with quite specific details on what is required?

By the way he is an engineer/fitter & turner so would be doing most if not all of the work himself so labour costs are non existant (except maybe auto electrician)

Cheers for any help

seriously, i suggest a lexus v8 conversion

engine you can pick up for $1g with loom etc, then whatever box you are going to use, whether the factory auto(my suggestion) or w series box.

nice light engine, with plenty of potential.

197kgs of alloy v8

skids aplenty.

$2g (approx) would see it in and running

$&#$% now that would be crazy!!! so what box bolts up to that? dont think he would wanna go auto, is it just a w5X or does it need somethin more hard out?

realistically i think that it might be too much power, but hell it would be fun

wouldnt that be a bitch to cert, by comparison to a 'humble' 4ag(z)e/12a/3tgteu?
surely it would require a whole lot of other (serious) mods to make it safe.

PS: love that animated gif in the signature!!!

Hey

well they dont have too much power from factory 194kws at the fly.
W series box should handle the jandle for abit (careful driving), but you would be better off with a late model w58 from a jza80 or a r154 box.

Or just have a good supply of normal w series boxes.

The auto is my pick as its plenty strong enough, but then you need to play around abit if you run an aftermarket ecu.

Id say if the chassis is good enough for a high powered 4agze then the 1uz would be fine, probably weigh similar weight to the 4agze too.

check that out.

dunno about that one mate, 2g is a tad too cheap for that sort of conversion

don't forget custom gearbox and engine mounts, also a custom driveshaft, and a custom diff mounts for the hilux or AE86 diff or whatever you use that will handle the extra power, then there is wiring which is never cheap or easy, don't forget the fuel system, all new lines and pump, oh and a surge tank setup, then you get to the brakes, you will need larger front brakes to get a cert, so AE86 struts or something, and also probably a larger brake booster, if you go for a w series box you will need a bellhousing made up to suit, oh and buy a new clucth kit etc, also need to setup your pedal box for hydraulic clutch, and get hold of a clutch slave and master cylinder as well, then there is the fact a ke30 is and old car, the steering box system it has will get very sloppy, which means replacing pitman arms, tierods etc. as well (unless you want to change it to rack and pinion steering)

so really a ke30 with a 1uz.. for 2g... don't see that happening

i said in and running, of course he would need to sort out the diff etc, but you could have it in and driving for $2g

unless you think you know better?

$10 says you can't have a Ke30 with a 1uz in and running for 2g

unless you have some really really good hook ups for cheap parts etc. (full respect if you do though :D )

alright kids, dont get ya knickers in a twist

as far as all the mounts and engineering he can do that and probably has hook ups for getting stuff cheaper. so i suppose it may be viable, but i think that the engine and gearbox and other parts may add up, but that happens with any conversion though.

any other suggestions? just throw some ideas in the air, doesnt have to be toyota

And obviously you have forgotten my mates 1uz super charged ma61, which i helped out with.

Why not try something basically factory?
I would suggest a 3T pushrod motor. Bump compression, wild cam, big carbs and a set of extractors. It was a factory fitment to the *E3* shell anyway, and very few people stick to NA these days.

yeah i had a 3t in the 26, but what is the point? costs too much to get anything decent out of an old shitty motor like that.

there is a reason that not many people stick with n/a.... i think it is boost

he'd wanna start with a solid base with lots of room for improvement, things start out feeling powerful but ya get used to them and wanna bump up the fun 8)

cheers, for the input everyone... anyone agree on the 12a option?

A mate and I are currently working on a ke30 and are basically trying to make the same decision. It has pretty much come down to a custom turbo setup on a 4age or the 12a.

So far we haven't really worked out what we are going to do in terms of driveline. From what I know (which isn't a lot) there is nothing in terms of diff/rear axle that you can just bolt in.

Here is a page with some info on doing the rotary conversion on a KE70. It may be useful.

what about a SR20DET or a RB20?
Find a skyline some rice boy has crashed and salvage parts heh.

my mates got one in a Mk3 Cortina. goes hard.

12a would be mean. but heaps of people do that. i think the Nissan engine would be mint.

Well doesnt take much to get you going now does it!- high horse?! im not the one with 2 cents for everything. 2k for a 1uz conversion- hell i got 2k for ya to do me a conversion. i think before poeple start throwing numbers round willy nilly they should actually count up the cost of parts on their fingers and toes.

sorry somehow i missed the part where he says he can get parts at super super cheap prices

i must be a complete idiot, and obviously you in your great wisdom knows so so much more about this than i do

but perhaps you should learn to admit that you may have under estimated the cost of this kind of conversion just a wee bit, its ok mate, people make mistakes sometimes, i know i do
