4agte splutter while spooling

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Sun Feb 27, 2005 10:05 pm

Yay another 4agte thread!!

Ok, ironing out probs with this car so help would be appreciated.

When i first got the car it ran roughly, it would cough and splutter while the turbo spooled at about 3500 in any gear, then would pull well. Ive used some injector cleaner, checked vacuum hoses, plugged in throttle sensor (no really...), checked plugs, basicly the easy stuff. Now ive got it legal and got some more testing done.

I've even experimented by disconnecting the actuator rod and it drove smoothly just guttless lol. So obviously a boost enduced problem.

The car now pulls well in 1st and 2nd but in 3rd it takes ages to spool (50k area) plus coughs making it take even longer to spool. Also at motorway speeds its much worse, in 5th with throttle slightly depressed it will jerk and cough badly making it useless to even try.

What else could i try? Im thinking fuel filter or afm (what/where do i adjust?)

Setup:
- 4agze
- T25g - A/R .80 (too much for 1600?)
- Bigport
- Standard ecu
- Possibly evo cooler... bigger than vr4 anyway
- Very bad press bent pipes (will replace)
- AFM is before turbo with pod
- Decent exhaust manifold
- 2 1/4 exhaust

- Actuator arm: This has been cut and welded to be adjustable (at first it had very little movement so i took it off and made it about 1cm longer, but when i test drove, it didn't seem to make a difference)

I first thought this could be part of the problem i.e. wastegate not fully open or closed, but have figured that one out yet.

Sorry about the long post/giberish... this has been a learning experience for me since its my first turbo and im used to rwds aswell lol  got understeer :?

Also i had a tempory gauge fitted to test the boost level and it was quite low at 9psi and when driving in 2nd at low speed and put foot to the floor it seem to be hissing as if the wastegate is open at the wrong time the it finally starts pulling hard (ish).

you will need to preload the actuator a little.
get an analog volt meter on the o2 sensor... see if it's coughing rich or lean.

Your setup sounds quite conventional to me, ie. I can't see any probs there but what spark plug gap are you running? Shouldn't be any bigger than about 0.8mm on a turbo engine and leads cap, rotor also in good condition? If not replace them, do you get any ecu error codes? Ignition timing spot on?
Sorry I have no experience with 4agte's only 4age's and 3sgte's etc but that might give you a few starting pointers.

if you use a digital one it will kill the sensor filament

Hmm few things to try there, hopefully i get sometime tomorrow to stuff around with it.

Btw its running mitsi coils for some reason just like the later gze's, is this not normal? I thought it was just the mr2's that had distributors. Also the wiring loom has been screwed with/re-done (car was stolen and butchered with last owner...) Its all there though... so far.

Hmm sounds a bit dodgey but might pay to go over the wiring with a fine tooth comb, yeah only the aw11 4agze's came with dizzys afaik

just a thought, my car had exact same problem as this, and found to be my air flow meter.

have you checked ecu for codes

Have you checked the basics'.

Possibly a HT lead or lack of coil output?
