Gearbox swaps on a Mk3 with digital dash - speedo issues

Postby Four_Seven » Fri Mar 11, 2005 7:11 pm

Don't know if this is in the right section but i've seen a mark III supra for sale with a gearbox conversion. Seems like a good deal but the digital dash is off because of the conversion.. - what ways do i have of fixing it? its got a 1G-GTE engine in it if that's any help.

The manual conversion in itself would not put the speedo off except if the cable is not on properly. If you look at the bottom of the gearbox on the speedo drive make sure it's screwed on properly.

i've done this conversion myself in a ga70 with a 1g-gte and it doesn't affect the speedo at all. what kind of gearbox are you using or did you use?

You sure about that?
Its quite possible we are talking about my supra here. The speedo definatly did change with the manual conversion (w57) about 15-20% fast. It also jumps a little randomly, but im positive the conversion changed the speed. Cables are all sweet and in well. Drive gear is sweet.
Without quoting me Im sure hunt and afew others got a reducer gear set put in their speedos after auto-manual conversions.I was told the auto diff is geared different to the manual ones!?

hrmmm that's very interesting then...

I didn't notice any sort of a difference at all once I finished with my conversion what so ever... :?

I used a W57 aswell. I wouldn't have thought it would matter at all. Anybody got the diff ratios from both auto and manual mk3s to compare?

AE92TypeX ygpm

So it's driven by a cable, not something electric? there's a kit at jaycar that'll tweak a digital signal but if the speedo reads off a cable it'd be useless...

I'm not completely sure with the digital dashes what is used to convert the data from the speedo cable to digital format but from the gearbox itself it's cable driven...

Sounds to me that, thats your problem.

Not a biggy, but yeah you will need to grab the drive gear from the auto and put it into the new manual.

bobs your uncle.

Problem with that is the drive gear was a different diameter from auto to manual- tried that when I did the conversion.
