Nope, jst so long as they shield most of the hot air from your engine bay away from the filter. Ive seen real small air boxes that work quite well.

Dont, if u can help it use plastic. Use steel or aluminium. If your mum's gt sum old baking trays, use those. Thats how I made my airbox in my old ae101 trueno. Jst clean off the biscuit stains first. Or go down to your nearest engineering store and buy sum. Its not that expensive. Gt a 1m x 1m sheet bout 1mm thick, so that its easy to cut and bend. 2 - 3 mm if your going to weld it.

You don't want aluminium, steel or even baking trays - what you really need is carbon fibre 8)

I guess the molecular design of carbon fibre must improve airflow some how adding HP oh and don't forget about the extra 250g you'll save in weight.

So long as the bonnet comes down and closes off the airbox from the rest of the engine bay it shud be fine.

That Mk1 air box looks almost exactly like mine in my ae111, but wif the filter coming from the back.

The MKI box I designed essentially uses the bonnet as the 'lid' (as per bad20v's post) - effectively enclosing the filter and only allowing air to be drawn up from under the car.

Oooooooh - looking a bit envious there 1998

Now't to do with weight saving in this case (nor molecular design) - just that it was much easier to make the box out of carbon fibre as it says on the guide. And it wasn't expensive either.

Thin wall alloy is fine. 0.9 or 1.2 would be best. Easy to fold and easy to weld. We've just got a 2400mm box and pan folder at work so I've been playing by making cold air boxes for the work vehicles - hilux ute, diesel econovan and the 5k liteace which I'll get to when I have time. Doesn't really do diddly for their performance but raises the bling ratio somewhat.

You could fibreglass up something nice, it would be pretty easy, too.
