oil pressure problems

Postby 2Fast4vtec » Sat Feb 19, 2005 11:32 am

Hey lately my oil pressure gauge has been reading 50-70 psi. It has usually always read 40psi. What is up with it?
Cheers

Sounds like a faulty gauge or the relief valve in the oil pump is sticking closed causing the higher pressure.
Test with an independant gauge and if high run a flush through the engine and do an oil change otherwise take the valve out and clean it depending on what engine you have it may be alot of work.

what sorta engine is it on?
Mines runing 80psi at idle... im guessing its the relief valve,
on a silvertop do you remove the sump an the valve is below the oil pump?

Might seem obvious but just in case it causes anyone any confusion - oil pressure will drop quite significantly as an oil comes up to temperature.....

The oil pressure on my 4age sits at about 40 when cruising at 3,000rpm. but when you go round a corner the oil pressure drops to about 30, or to 20 if its a tight corner.

It has an 800km old 20v silvertop bottem end and is mounter transversly in a FWD car.

What would cause this other than a low oil level?

My 4k sits at 70psi when hot. Even with baffels in the sump it drops while cornering, braking etc.

Would a blocked oil passage raise the oil pressure?
Surley the relief valve would be set higher than 40 psi.?

That would be because you have a Mitsi right?

The lancer's and galant's actually spit the oil filters off when they're cold if they have an oil pressure relief problem.
We've had on do it in the workshop at idle when cold.
