why you wanna twin charge???????????

Postby shaggz » Wed Mar 30, 2005 9:12 pm

im pretty sure it can be done but wot are you trying to achieve you could get a bigger pully kit for supercharger adn score sum more boost
or you could take that blower off and slap on a turbo i remember altho a couple of years back i had a hotfours or fastfours mag and there was an fxgt hatch that wastwin charged but i cant remember how long ago and cant find my issue either
drive it till it breaks, then upgrade it

If you don't know enough about it, it's not one to attempt. It gets bloody complicated from what I've heard. And what I haven't heard is probably even more complicated!

We have played around with twin charging and it's twice the work for 1/2 the gains of a turbo conversion.

well it'll be done. there is another twin charged levin in dunedin and i want a race it. also i want to get some 12's or so. i've got the pully kit on order. well i mite justtake it to a performance shop and get them to do it and then play more with it.ihave a garret T3 off my old GTX in my guarage so that should do the trick. and also i want to prove to my mate that i CAN make my jap peace of shit as he says beat his chevy. but just with a supercharge i dont think it'll do it.

good luck man, cant wait to see that bill for twin cahrging, i would think around the 10K mark from a decent garage that knows what they are doing.
Advanced Imports has done it, they said it was so complicated they spent so much time and $ on it and they couldnt get the change over fully right, always had a lag between turbo taking over from the s/c. Their reccomendation was to just turbo it!!! so thats what I did like most other people on here.

thats the thing man. i dont want to be like most people. iwant something that no one alse has. something different. i used to work in a guarage and know alot about cars. i honestly dont think it'll be that big of a job. i think the only prob will be retarding the spark enough for the turbo. i mean i have all the equiptment tomake any type of pipes i need and have basic knowledge on how turbo engines are set up.. when its done i'll let all use guys know how it goes. but if any one out there has some helpfull knowledge on this any input would be helpfull.

Want a Pixie Caramel with that quote?

Seriously though... you want to do some research. Find out why people with a good knoledge of boost ended up dumping twin charge solutions. You also want to try and discover why there aren't any twin charge race cars anymore, like there were in the 80's. You also want to discover how you are going to create the boost, on which device at which rpm, how your going to switch between the two, and how your going to control the switching and max boost.
You think its easy, your kidding yourself.
You think it'll develop more power than a single turbo solution, your kidding yourself.
The answer is Helmholtz!

heh good luck.

Just go with a nice ball bearing turbo and that'll be plenty to do what you wanna do.

Well... I think I'll break the mould and actually post something constructive...

http://come.to/twincharger

This dude has done at least one twincharged engine. He's tried/trying two different setups.
SC first then turbo and now a turbo first then SC.

Good luck with this, if you get this to run well then you should post some results up since I'm wanting to twin charge my AE85.5, but won't be starting the research for that project properly for about 12 months (darn Student Loan).

good luck with it, but yeah it would be hard to beat a set up like jades or barrys.

Bang for buck man go turbo.

also there is more weight with keeping the s/c set up, where as im sure the turbo conversion would not add significant weight over the stock s/c set up.

barry should get into the 12s next time he drags, and im sure he hasnt spent that much on his set up.

you want to do something different?

there arent enough cars with the turbos poking out of the bonnets around

*holds back roaring laughter*

Dude, if you want to run 12's, get a V8. If you want a quick Levin, turbo it. Twin charging will be counter productive to your goal.

I imagine you'd have to use stronger internals too.

I think it was Matt Dunn that made a post saying that the one he toyed with produced something like 30psi @ 1000rpm

Yes, we ran turbocharger blowing into the supercharger and the boost was uncontrollable. In the end we got it to run a consistant 20psi all the time, but it was not a huge power producing engine as at those pressures the supercharger robs to much hp off the engine.

we changed to turbo only and it is both faster round the track and faster from a standing start.

The magazine with the twin charged red FX rolla is the HOT4's Annual 2002. I happen to have it here. Though reading through it, it seems to focus more on the pathetic body work of the car than anything actually important in typical HOT4's fashion. In my opinion you'd be better of putting the larger SC14 on it and raising the boost with a pulley or as people had said... turbo it, cheaper and probably better gains too.

you will be hard pressed to find a HKS twin charge kit there pretty much non existant now..........maybe 2nd hand but not new

you could make your own but talk about piss arse around, the biggest thing to sort out would be the change over trough the bypass valve " bpv " which mounts on the s/c interheater

just go turbo like bazda or evilgtz

why dont you bolt a 4agze on to the bottom axle of a shopping trollley from the warehouse and convert a racing gocarts rear axel and brake set up on to this jump in and strap on a helmet that should catipult you into the 12's easy peasy providing the shopping trolley dont have shopping in it.......................................... good luck for the conversion probably the hard way round for the same result slapping a descent turbo on would give i commend your inginuity.............. hell im gonna put nos into my 1.6 4afe wagon wont cut twelves maybe 20's......................[/quote]

Why did HKS build a twincharger setup ??

Postby jondee86 » Thu Mar 31, 2005 9:10 pm

I spoke with a guy who was building a twincharger 4AGE a few years back.

The idea is to use the off-idle reponse of the supercharger for a strong
bottom end, and give the turbo a chance to spool up. Then as the revs get
up and the supercharger starts to flatten out, switch over to the turbo for a
strong top end.

The supercharger and turbo are in parallel with a servo controlled waste
gate type arrangement changing from one to the other when the boost
from the turbo is higher than that available from the supercharger. Best
of both worlds, and you can use a big turbo without having a lag problem.

The most difficult thing was to get the transition nice and smooth to avoid
having a "bump" in the boost curve.

Cheers.... jondee86
