Link questions?

Postby Andy from the block » Sun Apr 03, 2005 10:36 am

Ive recently bought a Link (LEM v5) and was wondering :
1) do I need to purchase a differnt ignitor for my car? or anything
else? (why?)
2) where is a cheap place to get it installed in the Auckland area?
(or could anyone with experience give me a hand installing it?)
3) the link was programmed to suit a 4agze before it was sent,
is this the same tune as the standard 4agze ECU? ie: I cod still
thrash the car without proper tuning?
4) would it be worth going for a dyno tune now, seeing as I still
have to do any fuel mods (ie: standard everything) or should I
run the base map on the Link and wait till I get upgraded injectors
then do a dyno tune? (maybe do a road tune using laptop in the
meantime?)

any helpful feedback appreciated :P

1. I've always used the Link ignitor, however I know it will run 20 valve ignitors, don't have a clue about the 16 valve or ZE ignitors.
2. Not a clue
3. Its been setup for a ZE trigger. Not mapped for a ZE (unless someone has previously used this unit) It may start the engine, but will not run it correctly. You most certainly should not thrash it using the baseline map. If you can make it fire after installing it, have it tuned immediately.
4. A professional dyno tune, by someone who knows what they are doing and has successfully tuned vehicles before will save you lots of time, effort and heartache.

the reason you "cant" Use the igniters is due to EMF

i asked this ages ago.

but never bothered i just brought a mitsi igniter to do the job
piss easy to wire and reasonably cheap

As I've stated I've seen a Link running well with a 20 valve ignitor.
I also can't see how on earth EMF would be a consideration.
The ignitor is a basic computer. It's affected by EMF from the coils, however if your using the stock ignitor, coils and location, EMF would also be a problem with a standard ECU. IE changing the computer, so long as it can trigger the ignitor shouldn't be an issue.

well from what link have told me there computers are a far more sensitive to EMF, EMI than the stock computer.

something to do with the way the older igniters where sheilded?

im not saying it cant be done, im just passing the information on that was givin to me.

Your post is a bit dyslexic.

You go on about EMF/EMI being able to affect the Link ECU, which is correct. So you may have to relocate it, to a position other than that of the factory standard.

But that still has absolutely nothing to do with the ignitor. So has nothing to do with how the ignitor is shielded.

All electronic devices emmit EMF, some are suceptable to large fields from other devices such as coils. Both the computer and ignitor are such devices. Factory standard they are placed so they won't be affected by EMF. So I fail to see how replacement of the Computer will affect the Ignitor.

If the Link can fire the ignitor correctly then run it!

I think you will find that the problem with the older MW ingitions (Link) ignitor was the board flexed off the connector, and gave intermittant results.
My brand new ignitor from Link was faulty in this way.

The smaller format new ones are mounted differently and are also filled to prevent movement.

how is my post dyslexic?

i was passing information on that link electronics provided me with

this was an open question.

i was wanting you to reply, not go off on a tangent and insult me. :?

i personally dont really care, i was providing information which i have used and has worked successfully for me

BTW i have talking about an ae92 4agze igniter....

1 - It will depends on what coil setup you are going to run. As your Link is setup for a 4agze you'll probably need to run a mitsi ignitor type setup to run the multicoils. Link themselves have recommended not to use the stock 4agze ignitor although the stock coils are no problem.

2 - Ring Damian @ A1 Turbos (4105468) or drop me a PM. I have installed several links now.

3 - I'd be very carefull about thrashing the car without first checking the air/fuel ratios. Usually Link supplies the correct settings and a base map of sorts to get the car running but not a perfect tune.

4 - I wouldn't bother running on the dyno untill you have everything sorted. If you are intending to upgrade the fuel setup in the near future I'd suggest just checking the current air/fuels and waiting untill you've changed everything before hitting the dyno. Road tunes are more than adequate when using proper tuning tools - ie detset and wideband.

We have had problems with link's and std toyota ignitors.
we found that it ran but produced a weak spark which caused miss under load.
We swapped it for a link ignitor and have never had problems again.

seems everyone else has had the same problem as i did

could it also be something to do with dwell time?
