rebuild turbo or new one

Postby TRDmod » Sun Apr 10, 2005 11:33 pm

ok
i get told form here that my 205 can handle up to 17 psi safely as it runs very rich, and the engine can handle it but the weak ling is the turbo and it will crap itself.....

so, i was thinking rebuild turbo by all tech turbos and diesels to a steel turbine and use same old turbo, or buy a new one......
i see small turbos, roughly sajme size as mine now, that apprently have steel turbines and handle easy 20 psi of boost, ....

what should i do, cos it doesnt seem to be that 4expensive, and by putting it up to 17 psi, that will get me roughly 20-35 killowat more just like that

...
Have you got the hots? for what's in the box with the dots? ..... 0800 30 40 50

The rule of thumb is to keep it under 1 bar on a ceramic CT20B, especially for long thrashings at the track. For more boost, you may want to re-build and upgrade a CT26(st185/SW20 turbo) with a steel exhaust wheel and larger compressor. Althought some people have run upto 20psi through ceramic CT20B.

alltech know what they are doing.

i was under the understanding the steel "ct20b" is superior to the ct26....

That's what i keep hearing. But they are hard to come by aren't they. The only other easy option i see for reliable high boost is the upgraded/rebuilt CT26 with maybe a clipped turbine and/or bored waste gate (or external?) to help the exhaust gas flow. And if we still use the ST205 WTA intercooler lag shouldn't be to bad for track work should it?

AFAIA Steve murch is up for an upgrade.....quite sometime ago I sent him this:

Hey

Your the man in the know so I thought you might be able to offer your input on these:

http://www.fensport.co.uk/partsfiles/sw20tuning.htm

Down towards the bottom they talk about upgrades for CT26 & CT20B MR2 turbos....I know you have done CT26 turbos but it seems there isn't really anyone in NZ that has done much with CT20B's......would what Fensport can do to them be something you could do to one?? Obviously it ain't worth someone in NZ sending it over there to get done...would cosat a mint!!

I have talked to someone who has the Stage 2 on his ST205 GT-4 and his reply was:

"awsome. spools up very quick, positive boost by 2000 rpm and about 1 bar around 3000rpm holds 1.5bar to the redline feels vertualy lag free currently running aprox 350bhp but want to see what the power is when wound up to 1.8bar "

He sent back this reply:

hahahaha, i like the way they say they put in a 360 kit, they are 360 standard!!!! as far as the upgrade goes it looks like they use a ihi comp wheel which doesnt need a thicker shaft or they are using a ct26 shaft.
as far as comp wheel being up to 350hp and 48mm that just happens to be the same as an evo large 16g wheel. i have done upgrades on the caldina but using the mr2 comp wheel but if someone wonts me to follow it thru i can look into it, cheers steve m

Maybe he can do something for ya :)

Cheers

Another person to call would be Damian @ A1 Turbos. Coincidentally, he does alot of work for Altech (and visa versa). His number is 4105468 or www.a1turbos.co.nz although the site is still being constructed and only has the 1uz v8 content on it at present.
