help on suspension for 86 please.

Postby Bahamuth » Fri Apr 22, 2005 1:27 pm

Hi all,
I decided to get a set of new suspension. After some research, I'm thinking to get TRD springs and Tokico HTS illumina shocks for all 4 suspension (are they a good combination for daily drive and drift?). What I don't understand is, when people talking they put 8kg front suspension what does 8kg is for? is that the spring is 8kg or the shock 8kg? I'm still newbie in car area, I want to learn drifting. Is 8kg front and 6kg rear is good for learning to drift? I heard also people mention about short stroke, what is that mean? Anyone can recommend good suspension setting for learning to drift?

8kg refers to 8kg/mm in the springs, its the stiffnes of them (8KG force will cause it to move 1mm)... 8 & 6 are not good for learning to drift, too stiff, your probably better off getting no more than 5kg front and 3.5 rear to start off with... my words arent gospel tho its just my opinion, what does everyone else think?

Simmer down now, he has stated that he is new, so please cut some slack :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

thanks for the reply =)

yes, I did try to use the search, i try search suspension, spring, suspension 86 and more, but it seem return me with 17pages of non related to what I want. I guess then I need to learn how to use the search, because everytime I search for something, it brings me with huge amount of unrelated thread.

Thanks MetalupYoAss for the information,
I got another question, what is the spring rate for the original 86's spring? because if it not different too much i might just replace my absorber first and learn with stock. Reason why I need to change my shock because when I do hard turn left, I got rubbing sound from the back, I cannot find where it rubs but then if i go over bump quite fast it make same noise too, so I think my shock is gone.

I am working with K-style car shop in hobson street at the moment to carry a few bits for the ae85/6, Basically my reconmendation would be 8kg/mm front spring and 6-7kg/mm rear with tokico hts dampner for circuit drift(IMHO i think these rates are great for street to), For general street use + track 6kg/mm front and either 4.3 or 4.7kg/mm rear springs.
We are also looking at stocking other parts like Roll centre adjusters and aftermarket swaybar, traction brackets and adjustable panhard rods and rear upper arms, what do guys want to be able to buy locally?

sounds like a great idea gdsup.
is that the shop with all the extractors ect hanging in the window??
I am in the stages of rebuilding my 86 at the mo and suspension setup is something I dont really know a heap about just the basics.
I have noticed on my car when I have taken it to the track that it was quite lively in the back, a bit too jumpy and skittery. I would like to have a setup for road/track mostly and for a little bit of drift, so its got to be fairly comfy and forgivable.
I reckon its a part of the car which should be done well, and any advice and setups that work well is what we need.
cheers tim :)

Great idea gdsup, I'll be interested for 86's parts.
Right now what I have in my plan, trd spring, tokico shocks and cusco lsd.
I'm still newbie in drifting and I still drive the car for daily so I need suspension that good for learning and forgiving too.

@ras kongo, yep that's the shop. I went there couple of times, and my brother often go there. I'm also in stage of rebuilding and reconditioning my car. I totally agree we need advice, I don't want to mess the setup and make the car dangerous to drive.
