Help me 4age GURUS read this! red top-blue top engine swap..

Postby SkunkWeRX » Thu Apr 28, 2005 9:57 pm

ok just finished putting a blue top into a 89 fxgt, previouly had a redtop in her.started her up idles ok ,as soon as you give it revs is splutters and back fires out the airfilter.. at idle the enigne lite doesnt come on when u rev it,it comes on..
tried everything me and my mate can think of...
changed spark plugs injectors etc... done everything.. and were stumped as to the problem.
if this help we removed the 100 kw intake coz it wouldnt fit the blue top head....running blue top intake now but still running like crap... the engine seems healthy as.
any help would be great!:)

might be due to using a redtop ecu. need someone to confirm it will work with bluetop setup....

you need to use the redtop injectors and all the sensors, Have you got the spark plug order correct?

I thought the triggering on the smallport was different to the bluetop? Vvega has more details, but if its anything like he suspects then you may have to swap out the dizzy as well.
Another thing to think about before you just swap over the injectors is where the resistor is.. I have no idea on a standard 4age as my bluetop runs a Link. The reason I mention resistor is the fact that the injector resistance has changed from blue to smallport.
You'll also have issues with it being out of tune as the 100kw smallport flows differently than the bluetop, as such will have a different ignition and fuel curve.

In effect you need to run all sensors, wiring loom, ecu, injectors, fpr designed for your engine.

You might be better off in this instance attempting to get a bluetop ecu and wiring the car to suit.

Bluetop doesnt have resistors, just fat wires back to ecu. Unless the resistors are on the power side.
You said it comes up with a fault code. Have you checked what the fault code is? that should tell you whats wrong.
BTW, was the old engine redtop? or red/blacktop with TVIS written in the intake manifold? If there is a plug for the tvis then it must have been red/blacktop

If the check engine light flashes then check the fault codes.
Try measuring the resistance on eack of the injectors too.

Try your earths for security, although they are slightly different set-ups i made that mistake
