daily driver: what to get

Ok my criteria

Needs to have provisions for a good sounding stereo (prefer factory 6.5" speakers up front)

Cheapish on gas: ( i have a 3l turbo for my fight on wasting nzs fossil fuel supply)

quick and nibble ( will spend money on upgrading shocks and springs if needed)

Abit of boot space, for those "on the way home and need some groceries missions"

Not fussed about whether its auto or manual, but would prefer manual.

reliable. (would prefer a toyota or nissan, but open to suggestions)

Under or close to $4g may spend more if needed. (but cheaper the better)

RUST FREE (im not fighting that again)

not bothered if its fwd or rwd.

not a p.o.s

so anyone got any good suggestions?

I know this is probably going to get me flamed, but I honestly think you should consider a DA6 Integra (1989 - 1992ish?) with the B16A. They're stupidly reliable, handle brilliantly, reasonably fast (I had a couple keep up with my R32 from a rolling start, when it was factory!), and you can pick one up for as little as $2000. Unlike Toyotas, when they're high-kms', they don't seem to run out of puff.. I have a mate with one with around 260,000km on it, it still loves being on the fun side of 7000rpm!

Thats what I'm considering getting in the near future anyway, I just can't see many downsides over say, a 20V.

Get a simple little corolla with "A" series engine as "E" is not to good.

101 fwKw stock, manual, 600Km's+/tank, plenty of space for sounds, huge boot, decent handling, no rust, never broken down, sounds like your ideal car Matt

If I were you though I'd prob buy a VTEC Prelude as these cars can put out some serious power when modified, double wishbones all round. They aren't the lightest cars out which prob means you won't die if you take out a pole and as far I know they don't rust and I can't see them sucking too much gas but you might struggle to find one for $4k

if i was to buy another run around it would be a da8.

4 door xsi integra.

great fun, handle ok, lots of room etc

da6, da8's are awsomely good in a crash to... also come with sun roof, abs, air con etc, all the extras you could want

main problems are the gearboxes, but if its just a run around that wont bother you

My 2c on that is I had a mate who owned a 2dr Xsi. He said if we ever crash, raise my legs up or I'd lose them...

He also mentioned it during a police speeding ad or something. "Oh, theres a car like mine. Ah, she's probably screaming cause her legs are crushed"

Edit: Of course other than that, they're not bad. Don't bother trying to thrash it with any more than 2 people in it, as the wee 1.6 won't make it feel fast (my personal opinion), and they are pretty reliable indeed.

I knew 2 people that walked away from a 2 door XSi hitting a power-pole at around 170km - 180km...pure luck yes, but it still must say something for the car...

errr ok the DA series of integra, 89 onwards where one of the best crash rated small saloon, sedans of there time.

as for the speed thing, 4 people in a NA 1600 of course its not going to feel quick.
but id like to see a 20valve take out a 1600 vtec counterpart

i never been too fond of hondas , but our family has had a da6 since bout 60000km and its now got 250000km and its brilliant.hav only ever changed one clutch.i am the pretty much the only one who drives it now , and even my best efforts cant break it.
they dont go too bad if you can find one that hasnt been raped , and i got auckland to otaki on one tank which cost me bout 45$
if i had to choose tho , would definately be a 101

yeah toyotas dont have the electrical probs the hondas do, and are generally more reliable.
