3TGTE help.. ?

Postby RS13 » Sat Jun 11, 2005 12:48 pm

Asking on behalf;

Basically, a mate of mine has an AE85 racecar, with 3TGTE (forged pistons, custom manifold, big cams, T3 turbo, O-ringed, W57, heavy duty clutch) and Link ECU. It has been sitting in the garage for around 6 years now (Nic, you're a lazy bastard!), and the motor has only seen a few laps of Ruapuna, when the Link was getting sorted, so has VERY little wear.

The owner of the car has pulled the motor apart completely, and unfortunatley not kept bearings, pistons etc in the right order, but the caps and all that are numbered, so no problems there.

Basically, what we want to know;

1) What is the deal with crank bearings? Can I just put the bearings in any journal? Or do i have to wear them in with that oil stuff.. I normally haven't had this problem myself, as I tend to keep things in order.. any help?

2) Injectors. The ones on the car seem to be poked, and we have no idea what they are, or where they came from, and the place that built the motor no longer exist. What would be suitable injectors for this motor, from the Toyota range? 7MGTE? 3SGTE? What would work ok with the Link?

3) Would the gearbox require a rebuild, after having sat for so long? Or just throw fresh oil in it, and fire it up?

4) The Link ECU. Its' an early version, the car was tuned with it before it was put in the garage, but would it have kept the maps after this long without power? If not, it would still start the motor with the base map? If not, whereabouts in Chch is a good place to take it for tuning? And how much roughly would it cost?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated, as the sooner it gets sorted, the sooner it'll show up a drift day.. :wink:

Cheers! :D

Awesome! You wouldn't know what CC rating they'd be?

um, iv got 13bturbo RE injectors which are 550cc. top feed and use the original plugs. but they are low impedance. with the link computer u need to use high impedance injectors, or else u need to ballast resist low impedance injectors.

Well, the ones that are out of it have barely any wear at all. If I was to get new ones, how do I go about wearing them in? Do I need to fit them into the journals, place the crank in and use that "wearing in" oil stuff? Or just drop them in, bolt it all together, and fire it up?

It's a little unfortunate that he hasn't keep the parts in order, I'd agree with HRT, go get a set of new bearings, but make sure you get the correct ones - the old ones might be oversized etc. Make sure the crank journals are still in good nick. The reason you want to put the bearings/pistons back in the same places they came out of as things wear at different rates and though you might get away with it, it's always good practice to put things back where they came from. As for wearing them in, I'd just chuck the bearings in, bolt the crank in and drive the car reasonably quietly for say 500kms, the idea of the running-in oil is to get the piston rings to bed in, so it's not really an issue with the bearings.

As for the gearbox, I'd just throw in some new oil. You'll know when you drive it whether the gearbox is shagged or not :)

As for the link tuning, there's a new place that's opened up that does all the link tuning, can't remember off the top of my head what they're called. I'm pretty sure that columbus car clinic does it too, my mate was quoted around $800-900 to have his link tuned, this is on a 3tgte as well so you're probably looking at a similar price to that.
