weird light problem

Postby Mr Revhead » Sat Jun 11, 2005 4:20 pm

ok im a total auto electrical n00b

heres my problem
car is an aw11 MR2
when i turn the lights on the lamps raise but theres no light, and the volt gauge hits 0 and the indicator dash lights both light up and the "lights left on" buzzer sounds. while the headlights are on (well switch to on) the indicators or hazards wont work. but when they are off they work, but some times super fast..... (theres no blown bulbs)
also when the indicators go into hyperdrive mode, the dash indicator flashs opposite of which way iv indicated. while this is happening all other lights (clock dash etc) all flash in time.... and the volt meter ticks in time. in fact when the hazzards are on the volt meter rapidly vibrates.

when i took a headlamp bulb out to see if i was getting power to the bulb, i found power at all 3 pins in the plug (h4 type bulb) hmmmmm
so i pulled the other plug off to check that one. that was fine... except only had power to one pin. when i rechecked the other plug, i found the same thing. only power to one pin as normal, but when i switch to highbeam its still only that same pin with power. yet with bulbs in, theres no light
so with one or both bulbs in i get power to all 3 pins on each plug (both bulbs work fine when plugged into battery) but when using a test light on the earth pin and a power pin, everything is fine.

im f**ked if i can figure it out HELP :(

Wires have probably rusted out

Nah, does the car charge properly? How good is the battery? Seen all kinds of odd gremlins strike from a suss battery.

That might not be far from the truth. Most electrical problems I had on my old car where from bad contact (Although I never had any problems as bizarre as yours).

yeah iv thought of that, but i cant find one (doesnt make it any easier when my multimeter is bung :x ) but how can a bad earth result in power in the earth wire?

the bad earth actually results in power in earth wire (white/black), it is powered thru lights (or other load) from ignition or Batt...
think of it, if you disconnect the negative terminal from battery and measure the voltage between the plug and the battey you will get 12V, and even test light will turn on if you have something draining the power...

I meant if you measure the voltage between negative terminal on battery (think of it as good earth) and disconnected terminal (think of it as bad earth)
