Turbo Timers

Postby Toxic » Tue Jul 05, 2005 11:00 pm

Hey guys

What are your opinions of turbo timers. Do i need to invest in one.

Are they just a waste of gas, or do they actually protect the turbo.

I have heard that cooling the engine is better done while moving rather than standing still. Others say if you dont have one you will cook your seals.

please advise.

Wat are some good brands to purchase and what sort of $$ should i be putting into one.

got a water cooled turbo?

A: Water provides a certain margin of safety when the engine is shut off. Thanks to engine heat, coolant normally continues to circulate through the bearing housing, thus drawing heat away from the bearings. If the car is shut down properly and the engine is allowed to cool it is not mandatory to use water lines. Whether to use water lines depends on the convenience of plumbing the car and the vehicle's intended use.

Seems like complete agreement to me.

RS13 wrote:So, does this mean shutting an oil-cooled car down properly would be letting it run momentarily after extended high temps, utilising a turbo timer?

I'd hardly call them oil cooled, they're really air cooled with pressure fed oil lubrication, there's not enough oil flow too cool anything.

And if turbo timers are pointless, then why do so many big-name cars over Japan have them? Surely if say, HKS make them, they must do something?

Yes, for non water cooled turbos like TD-05,TD-06,T-67, T-78 T-88 etc. However as Toyota Turbos (well at least all the modern one I know about) are all water cooled, so like I said;

Turbo timers are just wank factor on water cooled turbos.

Its a newer turbo ("ct20b") so it will probably be water cooled. The only reason you need a t-timer is if you plan on boosting right up until you climb out the driver's door. If you slow down and cruise for the last 2 or 3 minutes of each journey, then the timer would be redundant / wasting fuel.

I laugh when people rock up to our place and their cars are left running for about 5 minutes to let the factory turbo running factory boost cool down

if its a factory turbo, which it will be i imagine, its water cooled..

in which case, nup, dont need it :).

so, youll need a turbo timer if:

we should make a form.

here i will...

*question*, Is your turbocharger water cooled?
[if yes, goto yes]
[if no, goto no]
yes = you dont require a turbo timer
no = you do not require a turbo timer

YAY..........

have you modified the turbocharger?

chances are im guessing you havnt if you dont know about water lines etc.

so its going to be a ct20b... which is water cooled. Thus, you dont NEED a turbo timer. We have one in the mr2 mainly just for the boost gauge (peak etc). i never turn it off though when im about to get out... so i just let it do its 10 second thing, might turn it down to 5 actually....
