best way to clean engine buildup?

What's the best/safe way to clean all the gunk off inside the engine head when you took the cam cover off? heaps of carbon buildup which is not that hard, feel just like mud and semi dry mud.
have got a 4age which i think haven't done much oil chance in it life...
Engine is on engine stand. trying to clean as much as possible without doing any damage and taking any bolts/cam off.
Any idea? Currently only using tooth brush and engine degreser. Wondering if there is more effective way...?

Have you heard of power up? I think it's only avalible through trade in heavy machinery (earth movers) but it works in all oil lumbricant engines. Basically its cleans all the deposits like your asking.

Dad used it on my 4age. Oil change + power up = oil went completely black within hours.

Another oil change and the oil has been sweet for a month. Still looks like the stuff I put in

Highly recommend it.

Basically the NNL690 is the cleaner. It has a yellow label, the other one has a blue label and is the additive for normal use.

cool, thanks alot. So I have to have this stuff put into the engine like "STP" engine flush stuff?
This is not a cleaner/degreser type thing that i can spray on and things come off etc?
How much they normaly cost?

Good ol Diesel works wonders on the "gunk" built up on the inside of rocker covers and heads. I saw someone do an oil change once with diesel instead of oil and ran it for about 1 min then changed it with regular oil - cleanest engine inside ive ever seen. I wouldnt recommend this though, cant be good for the bearings.

diesel oil is fine has a detergent in it. Cant harm your car much if you only run it for a short time. All my farm cars run it because I can grab it free from work and they all still go mint

Oh I see you have your engine in pieces. Its an oil additive. Its quite expensive, about $80 per litre but it does a really good job.

If its a diesel engine then dont put diesel in the sump and start it

What we do at work(with engine in or out) if it's bad is take the rocker cover off, the sump off and use a steam cleaner to clean it all out. Cleans all the oil galleries etc, and the main buildup. Then fill with oil and engine flush, run for 15 mins, drain & refill with oil. Great way to clean SR engines

hey man, I would just strip it down and dip all the bits, My old motor that I had for r6 and R2 looked exactly like that, trouble with steam cleaning the engine is you lossen alot but prob wont get it all out, so when you are on the track it will all suck up on the pick up and block it, like mine did, no matter how many flushes, then at open day i ran a bearing, so best to spend a little more time and clean it properly i think, I have learnt my lesson anyway

yeah, i already striped it to pieces and gave them a good wash with soappy hot steam thing machine at a garage...
will be getting it full rebuilt, so it will have a good bath in acid
the pickup thing almost fully clog up, so that explain the shinny brass colour bearing...

i work at an import car dealership and iv seen this happen to many toyotas before believe or not after talking with our japaniese agent the genral puplic in japan dont beleive the have to service toyota because they give no trouble the just keep topping them up with oil when its needed thats why this sort of thing happens its sad but to be fair they dont really care what happens to there old car when little old new zealand comes and buys them. for them its chaep own a car no service then sell to easy

Dnt muck around keith go see alistar at motor machinists and get every part dipped in the hot and cold tanks (Alloy cold and steel hot), saves you so much work and the engine will come up like new!

cheers sam, I already taken it apart after taking off the sump..
I bring it to GearTech and they cleaned them for me as they currently sponsoring my brother drift car.
They gave it a few hot soappy bath but still some gunk won't want to leave the parts, so gave it a few kerosine wash... abit better, but not 100% clean.
is in pieces now at Beltdrive on the floor.. .waiting to go to his machinese.
