4wd corola wagon engine converstion

Postby DNTASK » Wed Jul 06, 2005 6:49 pm

my mate has a 96 corola wagon, 4wd with the 4AFE he is wanting to know whether its possible to convert it to a 4AGZE while still maintaining the 4wd. wondering if anyone knows if its possible and what wd need to be done. will he be able to use the same gearbox and if the driveshaft needs to be shortened or anything like that. are the engine mounts the same, obviously it would need to be certified right?
any help would be much appreciated

possibly the box would be the weak point when put up to the power of the ze compared to the fe. Not 100% sure, but should bolt up, may have to play around with engine mounts. Obvously 4agze loom etc. Have you tried a search? I recall someone talking about it some time ago

she'll bolt up easy as pie, and I think a 4AGZE should work fine.
Considering a T3 turbo 4AGTE can be powered through the standard gearbox!

i have an ae100 wagon with the ae92 4agze. I contemplated changing it to four wheel drive but decided against it. The ZE will bolt straight up but as the others have said you will have troubles with the gearbox. LOMOFO on here also has a ae series wagon with a ZE so you could always ask him about this modification

only if your gearbox is already an e5* or other E series box. If it's a c5* etc then nothing will fit.

cheers for all the input guys, its just a plan that my mate was having for his car at the mo. he wants the 4AGZE for a bit of extra power for getting up the mountain in ski season, its a big slugish at the mo so yeah wanting to keep the 4wd. so do u know it there is a way to modify the gt-4 box to blot up onto the back of the 4agze? just a thought. but then wd need to modify a drive shaft as well ay. then it would probly be best to go with a gt-4 diff as well ay, bcoz the standard one may not hold up to the power increase...
i wasnt too sure about whether the 4agze mounts wd be the same as the 4afe, but if u rekon they are, sweet.
weve done a few conversions on other cars (mostly nissan) so will be able to do the transplants no problems, just wondering whether it would all work out sweet as.

I don't know much about E55F5's, but from what I've seen in comparisons between E51 (mr2 4agze box), E153 (mr2 3sgte box) and E150F(gt4 3sgte box), you should, theoretically, be able to put a 4a bellhousing from your current gearbox or an E51 onto a gt4 E150F (or other gt4 box), which will should work fine on the 4agze.
However, there shouldn't be a huge difference in strength between what you have and a gt4 box, as they're both from the same family, and hould have very similar internals. There may be differences in the transfer box, or the diffs inside the boxes. The driveshafts should fit too, as they do between E51, E153 and E150F.
The rear diff might be able to swap, but if it can then there is also a chance that it's not much of an upgrade, unless you don't currently have an LSD, most gt4's have TorSen diffs.

can I make a suggestion that if you're going to put a 4agze in, you'd might aswell go a step further and put a 3sgte + gt4 box in.
If you are keen on this idea then send me a PM, the gt4 box should go in with the same mounts (just have to change the front bellhousing mount), and make a new cambelt end mount. Since you're out west I should be able to lend some help from my experience with gt4's and engine conversions :)

ill pass all this info onto my mate and see wat he has to say, im pretty sure that the wagon has an LSD, its got the switch which locks the diff for getting out of slippery situations...
