couldn't tell you oil prices, but I know that toyota in wellington use castrol protec and castrol magnatec - both with a rating of 10W30.

that was supposed to be 10w30, as i've now corrected it to. and that's what its got noted on all of the magnatec stuff in the workshop (which I should know by now seeing as the guys always get me to write out the service stickers, etc) - i'd say its possible that it comes in a few different ratings

I would guess that you would have spent more than $800 on petrol after driving 8000km...
Soooo - $80 spent on oil isn't too outrageous.
Give it good oil and genuine toyotas oil filter and think about changing both every 5000km.
You won't go wrong doing this.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

how much is your engine worth to you?

personally i think mobil 1 is a bit thin, 20vs use a bit of oil. i use shell helix plus. no complaints. basiclly any oil from a good brand in the 10-15 40-50 range will be fine. as ken said a genuine filter (TRD is also very good) is an important thing, ryco filters work, but you wont find one on my car. and i can get em for like $5 each....

i cane the ass off mine with 15w 40 reppys oil and all go with the ryco. old girl never misses a beat, after seeing oil tests done on loaded bearings i have realised they are all crap, especially mobil one, might as well pay crap all for crap oil.
currently beating - AE101 Sedan, blacktop/6spd, tein coilovers, braided lines, cup holder, and every other bloody thing possible.

What specs has the Mobil 1 you buy down there in New Zealand?? Is it 0w-40? 'cause here in Perú Mobil 1 was sold 'till now as 15w-50, but recently they're coming thinner, 0w-40. I use Castrol RS 10w-60 in my blacktop 20v, 'cause I always hear about the "wonderful benefits" of it on revvy engines, but I've been uncertain about using it sometimes, considering my engine has now 160.000km done and it's beginning to drink more oil since the last 20.000km. Any suggestions?? Thanks mates

ok double checked at work today - the 10w30 is the rating of the magnatec that the workshop uses, however it is only possible to get in in 10w40 when buying it in bottles.

I use Castrol GTX Protec, seems ok, and if you time it right its only $20 a bottle (like right now at super cheap auto)

Not worth putting Mobil 1 in a car that drinks it! And besides i've already had 2 vechiles shit themselves running that useless crap  - so now i never buy anything from mobil!!!!!

Shell Helix 10w40 (semi-syn) Easily the best oil I have used. My 3S doesnt drink much of it at all and its still smooth as a few '000km after the service. I've used many, Pennzoil, Mobil, Castrol, BP but Shell seems to do it for me.

Whats a genuine filter worth... roughly?

Im using a z386 on my 185 even though it recommends a z191a cos its a easier fit and I have seen too many z191a's leak!

I use the valvoline vr1 semi synthetic in my blacktop and it seems good.

Used to use Mobil 1 but a couple of years ago there were a couple of posts on here or on SDU where people had found that it suddenly went gluey. Was probably just a bad batch or something but after that I changed and now i quite like only spending half as much on oil that seems to do the same thing.
