K&N VS TRD

Postby XERO » Sat Aug 06, 2005 10:53 pm

Hey Guys

I own a 1997 Caldina GT (3SGE BEAMS) I am looking at getting better induction and airflow into my engine...

At the moment i have a TRD panel filter in my car and a friend of mine said that the K&N panel filter should be better??? Is this true??

Also he has a GT-T and it looks like the intake plume is bigger on my car, is this factory??

Can you supply some pics?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Read this. ;)

We suggest that you retain the standard factory filter element in the box - the huge power gains apparently made by replacing this element with an aftermarket one are simply mythical.

the main advantages using a k&n filter are that they never have to be replaced, just wash and reuse.
just replacing a panel filter will never yield huge increases.

unless the old one was clogged full of crap that is....

also i seem to remember some magazine doing a test on filters and some brands of paper filters can flow better than reusable filters...

dunno about trd stuff, but no reason to think it would be a bad thing.

tricky.....
k&n have the rep and the following!
TRD are good..... however only the k&n is reusable.
so.... hp gain = who knows.....
value for money = k&n

i personally use a k&n panel

big numbers there revhead :).

performance filters will reduce filtration to increase flow.

take your pick.. standard air filters are fine, the airbox is the bottle neck (in some cars), and cold air pickup.

If you just run a duct to teh cold air box, youll probbaly notice the most gain, bar a full out cai (fully sealed etc).

i put a TOMS one in my old ae111, to be honest, i only noticed a difference because i was expcting it, anyone else in the car wouldnt know the difference at all.

Mark forget it - TRD / KnN / Simota / other reasonable quality gear - there is stuff all difference in performance. Spend your money on a turbo!

I remember a few years back reading in fast fours they dynoed every available air filter on the market ,results were a maximum of 1.5 kw at the wheels and a difference of 1kw from the cheapest to the most exspensive. k&n was at the top by a fraction over simota and some other brands

Yep, some came unpainted.

Perhaps they figured caldina owners never look under the bonnet anyway.

Blacktop has the dual VVTi like the altezzas... Redtop Beams came out in mr2's and such....

I think the redtop was good for 190ps
and the blacktop is good for 210-220ps
