Postby crispy'86 » Sat Aug 13, 2005 8:58 am

I'm just learning about all thisd stuff so what way does this operate?? And how does the external wastegate get conrolled and what about the rest of the exhaust?? How does it join the rest of the system if there is an external wastegate??

an external waste gate is a valve, spring and diaphram setup, that when boost pressure over comes the spring pressure it will push on the diaphram pushing the valve open.

it is controlled by a pressure line from the boost side any were after the turbo,
most external wategates have 2 ports for boost control, the lower pushing up on the diaphram is the control, and will open at the pressure it takes to overcome the spring,
if a controller or boost tap is used pressure can be regulated into the top pushing down on the diaphram increasing the pressure the lower port needs to move the spring.

it differs to an internal that it is contained in itself, unlike an internal that has a port in the turbine housing, but operates in the same principle, it has a diaphram, spring and a rod that moves the wastegate flap.

Most externals are not plumbed back to the exhaust. Because most people buy and install them for the WANK factor,
it can easily be joined tot he rest of the exhaust, it is best to join it away from the turbo outlet so it doesnt interfer with the flow too much,

to join it in just cut a hole in the exhaust and weld a pipe in, then weld in more pipes to join to the wastegate dump. preferably use a small flexi as they are known for cracking if its just 'solid' pipe due to the different expansion rates etc.
