oil temp gauge

hi there.
can someone please give me some infomation on oil temp gauge. what do i need ? how hard is it to install ? and will in work on my levin ae101 ? im new to this stuff. thanks alot !!!

What do you want one for?- on a normal road engine, imo, not really much point,
But anyway...they are not too hard to install. If you just want a basic one, I'd get an electric one from repco. can be used for oil or water temp. the sender and instructions come with them.
you will then need to find a thread, or tap a new one into the engine somewhere (that bit could be more difficult). If you cant find one in the block and dont want to tap a new one, at a pinch you could place it into the drain plug area, but i'd advise against it as that places it at the bottom, and too close to the ground- its likely the wire, or worse sensor could get ripped out fairly easily with nasty consequences. Would be easy to weld a thread into the lower side of the sump for it however- just means dropping the pan.
mount the gauge, wire it all up and youre away.

good point, I should have added, its not simply a case of drilling the block and away you go. Any drilling would require the area to be flushed out as you dont want any bits of metal lodging into beerings or anything!
Plumbing into a cooler would be a good idea. If not that then I'd do the weld a thread into the sump suggestion I had- then you can take it off the car to get it done and cleaned before putting it back ont he car.

was going to suggest that, but you would need some pretty funky adapter pieces as many temp sensors have afew cm of the sensor sticking into the block past the thread.
still, if their easy enough to attain, that'd be the go.

the I thought about it and it wouldnt be anything special, just an extended threaded adapter to accomodate the sensor probe.
Only thought is, would it get enough oil circulation to give a precise reading? I assume it probably may, but someone may have something better than an assumption to back it up?
I mean pressure gauges not need to be in the line of flow, but water temp sensors generally are, so maybe a 'T' wont measure adequatly?

iv just got an adaptor plate that sits between the engine and oil filter with 3 threded holes init there around $40 if you can find one in a shop, they save alot of messing around as the factory ae101 20v ones sit under the aircon bracket.
