how do u remove ae101 door handle surround?

Postby AE25 » Sun Jun 30, 2002 11:16 am

got to replace an outer door handle but cant get the door trim off coz the inside door handle surround won't budge.
does it pull straight out? does it move to a certain side to get it out? is there something holding it in that i can't see?
got me puzzled
any help appreciated

would it be simula to a FXGT 20V one?

all i have done is stick 2 screw drivers in the 2 points (see the green line) in pic1 then pull it out. watch out for the extra point at pic2. after you have sticked the screw drivers in, pull the surrounding thingy to the back, the extra point is like a hook.

hope this helps

door handles

Postby Mista_T » Mon Jul 01, 2002 12:49 pm

Took me friggin' ages to figure that out when I did it. Was too scared to pull it much in case I was doing it the wrong way.

If you get stuck with the rest of the trim (and your doors are like a 20v FXGT's) you must:

Undo: the screws along the bottom of the door handle/arm rest, the screws at the front of the door where it closes against the dash, the plastic fastener things on the trailing edge of the door (push middle bit in, then pull whole thing out), the door handle.

The bottom of the door is fastened with plastic plug thingees which just pull out with a bit of coaxing. Now the panel should just be hanging by the lip along the bottom of the window. If you can reach up to unplug the elec window/ central locking loom at this point I found it made things a bit easier.

To remove panel, pull bottom of panel out a bit, then lift back end of panel. It should slide back a bit to clear the sail panel (which you can just pull off if its easier - same plugs as bottom of door panel). Then it will just lift out. Unless I've forgotten something (its been a while since I did this).

Hope this helps...

If it's the same as my 101 trueno, you have the lever which you pull to open the door and integrated in to this unit is the lock, with the red/orange sticker visible when it's unlocked.

You need to insert a flat head screwdriver above this, in between the plastic surround and the locking thing and lever the plastic surround gently up and back, it should come free pretty easily.

once you've done this you do the same for the bottom.

No amount of explaining helped me though, i had to get someone to show me :)

I tried the screwdriver method but haven't found anything to lever it against... someone else I talked to said pull the handle halfway out and then slide it off towards the back of the car, you have to wiggle it though...
he broke his the first time trying to use a screwdriver... i'm going to try that tommorrow when its light...

I've got a bit of a problem with getting stuff off my door too!!!
I need to fix the window as its a bit of a snail (very slow and f**kd), but the problem is i cn't get the door pannel off!!!!

I have been trying for months (end up getting shitty and giving up), and hav had a heap of ppl hav a go also but they also hav no luck! A few of the clips etc are now broken but still it wn't budge!!!
Its almost like it is glued on around the door handle some how!!!!

Does anyone have any ideas about how i can get this off????? or if they hav had a similar problem coz i feel like i am going nuts or something, hehe
