my ae92 died, need ideas or mechanic

Postby baker » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:00 pm

hey all. just wondering if you know of any good/well priced mechanics in auckland for my car (eastern suburbs area).
I was coming along the motorway yesterday afternoon when it cutout, i restarted it once and it was fine, but it felt a bit sluggish (the revs seemed ok, but not a whole lot of power). It did it again about 5 minutes later, but this time when i tried to restart it my alarm came on and went spastic. I dont know if it was beacuse of my immoboliser or not, but I had no powe at all (none of the electrics were working or anything). I left it on the side of the motorway for a couple of hours and came back with an aa guy. we jumped it and got it running, drove it down the off ramp to some lights at gillies ave and it died again. Jumped it once more and drove it to a friends house where it died and wont start.
any ideas what it could be? the battery is fine, has plenty of charge and current. At one stage when we were trying to start it it was smelling (burning smell).

any help would be appricated and if anyone knows a good mechanic the could you let me know. Thanks.

For a simple check, get your hands on a voltmeter, connect to batt and make sure your alternator is charging between 13.5-14.5v

quite possibly something to do with the alarm system.

A possibility is that your alarm has been shorting out and causing it to arm and subsequently kill all power (electric or otherwise)

do Ae92's have a limp mode?
might be that, but I dont think they had that back then.

I think you need an auto electritian not a mechanic!!!

What did he test and what was the result?

You can't test a battery with a voltmeter.

speaking from experience.............Got oil pressure???

my AE92 had similar issues, that i put down to dodgy starter, alternator.

within a day of selling the no.3 bearing had seized, and spat the shell out leaving a trail of metal through the bottom end.

From the sounds of it, it sounds like a problem i had in my fx when the earth wire failed due to age etc, when it heated up (which would be the burning smell) the car died. Replaced it and was away laughing.

Just some food for thought
