Race Fuel

Here is a random question foir you all - How safe is Race Fuel on a standard engine? I've heard of it being used on the road and is apparently cleaner burning than a lot of pump fuels used around the country. What i want to find out is what differences or problems it could cause in an every-day-use motor

I think the octane rating on it is around 100, but i'm not sure, does anybody know? cheers

its illegal to use race feul in road cars but its safe touse in just about all efi cars and alot of carbi ones 2 dependent on age

It's got a ton of lead and benzine in it, so is far from clean burning, eventually it'll foul your o2 sensors, and will block up most catalytic converters too.

You can get unleaded race fuel, but it's effin expensive.

"race gas" usually refers to leaded petrol, that is basically dated aviation fuel.

Yeah, proper race fuel is very expensive...well, actually compared to pump gas its pretty reasonable now

I priced up a 20l drum of VP 103, and it was $110+
Thing is, you'd notice 3/8ths of $&#$% difference in an NA car, and more than likely would actually lose power, as it burns so much slower.

i beg to differ. i had a heap of WRC control fuel and it makes a huge difference in a N/A engine ,possibly 15% maybe more power.

yeah, it isn't recommended to leave it in some vehicles, as the hydrocarbons will attack any plastic/rubber components

Try being stuck in the Sky City carpark with all the cars queued up (idling) when they left in the mornings. I was there as a scrutineer, and I tell ya, I wasn't feeling too flash after a couple of hours of those fumes.

Im sure you didnt use it in an average NA motor though did you

I think WRC fuel would probably be a bit different again to VP fuel, but I really have no idea.
I'd be very surprised if adding just race fuel gained you 15% power, unless you had very high compression and/or lots of advance.

the rally guys reckon that with the right program for the ecu, there can be an increase of up to 70hp in a group N car using the control fuel.

bit of both. bear in mind the old engine wasn't huge in power and was tired, but this fuel and a big carb and i reckon it was close to double at the wheels.
unfortunately ,one didn't check the fuel union on the carb, and an inferno followed.

But thats not just adding control fuel now is it

Again, its hardly fair to compare a race motor to your average guy on the street...I know on the right application race fuel makes a big difference, but if I were to chuck some into the wagon, it'd do jack for it.

look at brett lee sangs evo 2 in the latest performance car rs on pump gas 23psi 340kws at the wheels and on c16 373 kw on 23psi atw now thats a big differnce so you do deinatly get a power gain.

and how much of a timing increase?

if a 91 octane car makes 100hp, with no det, at say 5degree timin (whatever engine), what does it make on 98?

eg, 4efe starlet, will it make ANYmore power, with the same timing, with higher octane fuel?

It's all in the timing, when our lifters decide to act up, the phantom knock pulls 20 degrees, when driving, it feels like a sock has been stuffed into the turbo, even though the boost level is the same.
