From what youve described your right on the money with the baulk ring being worn. Go and see Jared at Hamilton toyota, you might be surprised at the price.
Youd have to describe at what times the box is making noises because at the moment i would suggest that some bearings need replacement too.
Dependent on what sort of job you want to do, castrol VMX in my opinion is THE best oil to use as a quick fix for this sort of problem.

Try and get your mitts on some proma, I dont know where to get it from but it often works a treat.

Also try castrol syntrax oil. We use it in GTX mazda and skyline gearboxes. Or find out what toyota recomends

Hi,
sorry I have no helpful advice but I would be interested in what oils you have tried. My own gearbox makes a noticable snicking sound into each gear -- nothing like a graunch but presumably a sign of wear. It does improve when warm -- though, of course, what I notice is that it's worse when cold. :D

Skidman -- have you found VMX at 80W more effective than Multitrax 75W-90 (the recommended viscosity range)? Does it affect the shift quality?

Yea we find that VMX tends to fix small problems like you have perky. But remember that its not going to work forever. It dose not change the shift feel at all, appart from usually getting rid of the 'skick'
The VMX has some properties like the fluid found in Viscous LDS, which resists sheering movement, thus giving the baulk rings a greater bite.

Out of curiosity is it doing it in all gears?

Well, nothing lasts for ever.

Yeah, I guess I should pay closer attention to the sound to make sure, but my impression is that it is more-or-less the same in every gear. Is your suspicion that this might not be the result of suprisingly even wear? As I say, it is not a graunching or grinding noise but it is quite noticable.

As for the shift feel, is it your opinion that the type of oil makes no noticable difference? I'm not arguing -- I have no idea -- but lots of folk seem to think it does.

I guess that all Boxes that have had VMX put in them have never been mine, so it is only that in my opinion that it feels the same. Guess it depends on how you change gears (fast or slow) too.
It is unusual to have the box 'snicking' in every gear.
Is there a short shifter installed?
Also whats your engine mounts like? youd be surprised what stuffed mounts will cause.
Plus you may want to check to see if your clutch is disengaging fully...i guess that youd notice that tho...

Hey thanks for all your replies. I may go and see Jared at hams toyota..surprise..will that be a bad one or good one?
Also I have tried a few synthetic mobil oils from work, which arent really totally suitable, but at the right price:) I tried mobil synthetic 75/90, and another SHC629, which is really thick like 85/140 just to humour myself to geta large noticeable difference. Worked a bit better with the thick stuff, but far from ideal when cold still. I spoke to a guy yesterday who said that some cars began to run teflon coated synchros, and to try either castrol VMX (which i'll give a whirl), or auto trans oil. He said either of those two will be good to test the synchros out, as are compatible with these type of synchro coatings. I wondered but we spoke for a while and he did seem to make sense. Also my T56 6 speed (new commy box) for my project car has a sticker on the side "use dextron II only"...which is trans oil from what i remember.... Wjhen I said "grounch much worse when cold" he pointed out staright away an oil problem, but said if these oils dont make any difference then its a job for him to look at a stripdown..hope not, just yet anyhow.. Thanks again.

Thanks for your suggestions, folks. And Ultrapulse, sorry for butting into your thread.

I don't think our Celica boxes have teflon coated synchros -- but someone is bound to know for sure.

My clutch works fine -- only a year old, and my shifter is standard. I haven't checked my engine mounts for a while. One was replaced at the same time as the clutch.

Jason -- did you find the Synchromesh (brand of oil)? I didn't know that was available in NZ.

Problem solved! I dumped the oil and replaced with a 50/50 mix of std castrol auto trans oil and castrol VMX. I can't believe the difference! U would never even know the 3rd syncho is possibly worn a little (as I believe it is). Drives like a new one, hot or cold!
I spoke to Charlie from Cambridge transmissions, who said try trans or vmx, if no go bring it in...(hoping not obviously).Had just over 1 litre of trans in shed, then topped up with vmx. It worked a treat so took him a doz macs gold and everyones happy. Thanks heaps again.
