110V wont power your power supply, NZ is 240V member, unless its a US laptop.

Its the powersupply that you would need to check, not the laptop - and yes mine is 110-230v as are many (most?) laptop power supplies

I agree that it probably runs a modified sine wave, as a pure sine wave inverter is pretty expensive, but a simple power supply for a laptop, which just rectifies back to DC, shouldn't have any problems with it provided the output from the inverter is a true 110VRMS.
Infact when you think about it, it seems kind of silly going from DC (car supply) -> AC -> DC to charge your laptop, you could easily build a voltage regulator circuit (or buy a pre-made one) provided the required voltage for charging the laptop is less than about 13VDC, and it will be more efficient than running through 2 wave converters.
I guess that doesn't answer the question of whether the outlet works though...
