Postby UZZ30 » Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:51 pm

i was reading the description for a 1991 v8 soarer on trade me and it said,

' Good on gas because it shuts of 4 of the cylinders when driving around unless you put you foot down and the all 8 kick in'

can any one verify if this is correct? i havent heard of any thing like this...

be great if it was true!

i know this isnt much relevant but kinda is, the new w16 by VW can go right down to 2 cylinders firing when power isnt needed, such as at idle etc, cool aye :)

i asked the guy selling the soarer where he found cylinder shutting down stuff he said he saw it on the internet,

'Have a look around the internet, i saw it on a page when i was doning some reserch before buying it. thanks'

Hmmm, ive never heard of this on the 1uz-fe so i think hes mistaken it for another engine....

Some GM V8 / V6 engines do this, as do some mitsi V6 / I4 engines.

He's still an idiot though.

I have read of the Lexus V8 doing this on gear changes to make them smoother, not sure if it was the 1UZ or the later 4.3L. Definitely not as far fetched as it sounds, quite a few manufacturers do this sort of thing.

I doubt the 1uz would do it, or we would have heard of it sooner!

Seems no one here does work on 2uz or 3uz's, (to bloody expensive in comparason to the 1uz).

The later 1UZFE's had a VVTi setup on them...

This MAY be what he's thinking of.
I'm all for tapping it and gapping it... but how fast does her father run?

Well that might be because NZ doesn't get the cars with those engines in them imported....

Sequoia, Tundra, LandCruiser SR5, LX470

And AFAIK the 3UZ is only released under a Lexus badge?

Well its obvious the guys mixed up the soarer v8 with another type of engine, probably a newer lexus v8.

www.planetsoarer.com covers everything to do with soarers and theres no mention of cylinders shuting down in it.

I have read somewhere before that the Soarer V8`s computer is reset everytime you turn the engine on and depending on how you drive for the first few minutes it will increase the power thus using more fuel etc... or decrease the power thus being more economical.

now, I have no idea if this is true or not, but no, the v8 soarer does not have the ability to use 4 or 8 cylinders

maybe its god f*kered spark plugs and when he cruises they foul up and it runs on four haha, or leaky injectors or sumthin then when he gases it it kicks into life. iv heard of the new commodore/GM v8s doing this tho, but only cutting off 2 cylinders when cruising.

From zoom magazine (while ive got it here), the "Jz, Uz and Gz toyota engine's"

1UZ-FE:

Type: 3968cc V8
Bore: 87.5mm
Stroke: 82.5mm
Comp: 10:1
Power: 191Kw @ 5400rpm
Torque: 353Nm @ 4600rpm

Released in 1989 in the Celsior (Lexus LS400) and also used in the Crown V8 and Soarer, the 1UZ is probably the most over-engineered engine in history. The bottom end is so strong that its just rediculous.

Weve seen them used in speed boats with huge twin turbo systems bolted to the standard engine. Weve also seen examples with over 300,000km's behind them still purring like a kiten. Unfortunately, the bottom-end torque delivery was a bit shy in the first version, but you couldnt ask for a smoother power curve.

VVT-I Version (1uz) Ups torque by 49Nm, and increased compression by .5:1. (along with the 206kw lie)
