Race Car - decisions?!?!

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Thu Oct 27, 2005 10:25 am

i want to get into some form of racing and have kinda narrowed it down to a couple:

A) car club type stuff - thinking an FXGT or similar

B) KT100 Go-Kart

part of the reason i have thought about these is that i have a fairly limited budget, with a mortgage and mrs :?

car club type stuff would be less often racing i imagine, but be more expensive. would still want to keep this car road legal (as the caldina isnt the best tow vehicle)

gotta try convince myself (and Carpet Burn) what will be the best way to go, and how much everything is going to cost vs the fun/thrill factor!!

any opinions welcome

To have some decent fun in a KT Kart it ain't cheap (depending how serous you wanna get) My mate started off racing them year's ago but didn't like loosing so had to step up everything to compete with the big boy's and yeah it wasn't cheap..

I would go for something along the line's of a Grass Kart.. 250cc 2 stroke engine = alot of side way's action and alot cheaper then running a KT.. Few my mate's Race them and shit they alot of fun :D ..

True well you could go for a track kart but with the 125cc - 250cc 2 stroke engine out of a MX Bike.. Most my mate's have gone to this as they have gear's and alot more fun (slidding round corner's etc) also alot cheaper then running KT's .. But hey it's all up to you fella..

I looked at getting into kart racing myself, but I'm thiking of going more with the other option and getting myself an FX-GT and start entering the local motorkhana's and that more. Are there people up in the 'naki that organise such things on a regular basis?

I looked at getting my son into karting. A mate of mine was the president of the local club and a good karter.
He advised me not to buy a cheap kart but to get a good one from the outset - say 4K.
The dilemna I had was that if my boy didn't like karting and wanted to quit I wasn't sure it would be easy to get out of a 4K kart.
On the otherhand 4K would buy a reasonable little clubcar and I was confident of getting my money back if he gave it up.
So we've gone that way.
If you're sure you'd get hooked on karting though, it's undoubtedly good value motorsport.

Build a KP60 race car with a 4K. Slots into 0-1300cc classes, piss easy to build, cheap as chips, plentiful parts....... lightweight sideways laughter!

There's an AE82 (NZ new even I think) down this way for about $4,500 or so with cage, seats, harness', sump guards and a couple of sets of wheels. In road legal condition as far as I have been told. It's only been used for a couple of autocrosses, so it isn't some battle weary old rally car.

Way cheaper than building it yourself.

Trust me ... if you can buy a car, it is *way* cheaper than building unless you can do everything yourself.
