Cops on Targa

Postby Cahuna » Fri Oct 28, 2005 8:55 am

Good coverage of the Police doing silly things on the Targa Rally on TV3 last night, and it's made todays newspapers

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10352409

And even more amusing was the quote in todays Targa Tales (from the Targa website):
Targa Tales wrote:We have a new road safety message from the New Zealand Police “Do as we say not as we do”. Yesterday the reports of a Patrol Car getting airborne on one of our stages (photo’s to come) proved that Pig’s Can Fly and after SS18 they proved they could also swim. A local cop from the district decided to offer some help by driving his Patrol Car through to check 4 trouble. At the start of the stage he was heard talking to some officials about his talent as a driver “Yeah Right”. As he came down the hill to our infamous left hander across the narrow bridge, opposite from our Hospitality Villa. He completely over cooked it and speared straight through the fence and down into the creek. Needless to say his ambition to be Police Commissioner floated down the river.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Two years back, I spent a day in the targa zero car (first car through on road closure) which was a police car. That was fun. The cop was a very good driver, and a pretty cool guy as well.

We dragged him up to Levin the day after the Targa (it finished in Wellington) and made him enter an autocross (no, not in the Police car). We stuck him in about half a dozen different peoples cars for drives, and we practically had to pry him out of my Corolla GT with a crowbar at the end of the day. He even set some fairly decent times, for a first time competitor.

He went home vowing that he was joining his local car club.

The cops on the event are generally very good value. A couple of years back they had a former competitor, Mike Bish, driving the 999 (sweeper) car. He was almost impossible to keep up with as we (in the results chase car) followed him through the stages - even though our car was a VR4 (albeit with a wally driving it - how we stayed on the road a few times I'll never know 8O ) and Bish just had a standard issue Commodore.

It's not suprising actually, very funny though! The cop car that cleared stage 3 on day one was setting a good pace and we were suprised he stayed on the road at the corner we were watching.

conflicting stories everywhere!
-about his name, intersection shape, condition etc

and that doesnt look like a 10m decent to me, more like 3m below road level!
