Rust repair help

Postby Zak » Tue Nov 15, 2005 7:09 pm

Hey, I just got my new ae85, and as any ae85 it has rust, it's not too much, but where it is, it's pretty bad eg. holes :(

How much does it cost to get rust cut out and rust proofed?

I don't really care about the look for now, but would like to paint it at a later stage.

Is there any good way to get rid of surface rust, before it gets worse?

Also, any tips from some one that has had to get rust fixed before?

Cheers :D

Cost depends on who does it and how bad it is, i know a place down here all they do is just weld in plates, everything else is done by you,

surface rust - get a wirebrush on it or a grinder and remove it that way and then treat it and paint over.

Thanks, I'd rather not touch the bad stuff at all, but I'm up for giving the surface rust a go, I just don't want it coming back.

Also roughly how long does each plate welded in take?

additionally how big the patch and the shape of it.
Also worth asking what they actually do when ringing for prices. some cheaper options only weld a plate over the top of it all (as is). You really want the old stuff properly cut out, rust killed then the new plate welded in so you can give it a little grind and blend it in with filler later when you prep to paint.
may sound stupid, but any rusty areas you are not looking at straight away could be coated in a brush of old engine oil- generally helps slow the process down. Just make sure you clean it damn good before any prep paint work in the future.

I went and saw the rust repair dude today, he said it's about $1000 worth :(

But thats ok, caus it's cheaper than buying another, possibly rusty ae85, but he's all booked up till about feb :?

So I need to get it done in auckland, any one got any recomendations?

I don't need it painted, just the rust fixed and rust proofed for now.

Cheers :D

You can get rust converter stuff for surface rust, dont know how good it works though. But $1000 sounds pricey, try a general engineering place see what they would do it for.

That was smoothened out ready for painting too, but it's about 4 mid sized holes, and a big bit under one of the rear windows.

Is that a fair price? or am I getting ripped for that price?

If you want to save money remove window trim and window and cut out the rust and make a nice square hole, that way all they have to do is make a panel to suit and weld it in. If i wasnt so busy with my ae-85 I would give you some help.
