Manual conversion wireing worries + other

Postby Quint » Thu Nov 17, 2005 10:37 am

Just finished sticking a W57 in my GA-70, got it together and she runs _sweet_ just got a few electrical problems i need help fixing :/
Anyone have any idea which wires to short out to stop the O/D Light from flashing on and off, and/or how to get the engine check light to $&#$% off, Its great, my cars trying to tell me its missing a gearbox, Oh and which wires on the auto loom are for the reversing lights?

Is the speedo drive the same?
What rpm should it be doing at 100-110 cause i'm pulling just below 3, which i thought was a bit too many... oh and does anyone else find their first gear to be a joke? Eg. do i need a new dif?
Oh and what would be the $$ return on a complete auto set-up? Box is in good condition could do with a service but still changes nicely, 150km.

I think thats all the probs i'm having, no doubt i'll find more :/

On a side note - Did anyone else have to make new brackets for the tailshaft of their gearbox to sit on where it mounts to the tunnel? And i'm takeing it i'll have to smear it with plenty of oil + shit so i don't get a failed wof for changed engine mounts? And why the hell is my handbrake in the way of my reverse gear :( can't put it in reverse when the handbrake is on, doh.

Ok lets see...

Next to the plug where you bridged the inhibetor (sp?) there should be another plug with I think 9 wires from Memory, you have connect 2 or 3 of those however I can't remember which ones as I haven't done it in soo long. I'll see whether I can find out for you and get back to you on which wires needs modding.

The reason your 1st gear will feel a tad short is because of the Auto diff ratios and the Manual gearbox's gear ratios. That RPM sounds about right as that's what I did in my Supra on around 100kph.

Speedo drives should be the same but can be a paint at times with the Manual Conversions. There's also a little mod/unit which fixes this which the guys on SCONZ use. (Again I didn't do this because I had no need so I'm not 100% sure on what exactly it is) I think Ae92TypeX knows what it is?

If you mean the X-member of the gearbox when you say tailshaft of the gearbox bolting on to the tunnel then yes the X-member needs to be modified. You normally can get 2 bolt holes to line up but the other 2 doesn't. Easiest thing to do is drill the holes out a bit as you only need around 3/4mm on the rear holes drilled out and it will line up.

If the O/D light is that much of a pain just remove the bulb...

When I did my ga70 conversion, once the inhibitor was bridged I unplugged and removed the auto ecu altogether- wasnt required for anything anymore. No od light to flash or gear selector lights on dash anymore.
...engine check light never came into the equation with me (perhaps because I dumped the auto ecu) so have a careful look around to make sure everything is plugged in etc- Have you run the diag for codes?
as Silent Knight says with the x-member. the auto one lines up with two bolts and I welded on an extension and drilled to bolt up the secon two bolts. It looked standard once I had finished so was never a problem.
On mine (with digital dash) I did find it was regstering a little fast for the speed. You can get a reducer gear made up which corrects this. It screws inline with the speedo cable just out from the box. However, these can cost a little to have made (ive been told) so do drive beside a mate at different speeds to see if yours is actually out & by what percentage. I never bothered to get a reducer gear in the end.

and reverse gear & handbrake...yea...

I never had any lights come on, on mine either and all I did was bridge the inhibitor. Didn't unplug auto ecu etc...

The revers gear and your handbrake I'm not entirely sure of though.
What sort of box did you use? Front, Mid, Rear shifter?
I haven't actually heard of this happen as of yet...

hmmm thats a worry then if the warning light _isn't_ about the gearbox being missing O_O. Used a W57, was told it had the shifter in the 'rear' position, obviously it didn't, i'd have to say mid from the look of it, the shifter sits just in front of the output shaft i think (two days, and its hazy) How'd u guys cover up the hole in your dash from the shifter (i had to cut some out) was thinking bout a piece of rubber, possibly ineer tube of a tractor tire etc, bolted on top with a hole for the shifter.

I also had the mid shifter position, but modified the stick so it was in the same final position when installed. Ideally imo to cover the hole you could adapt a shifter rubber from another car and have a little metal frame around it to seal it down properly. Initially I just had sound deadning, but was surprised about the amount of heat from the exhaust that went into the footwell. I then used, like you say, a piece of rubber and lots of tape to seal it. Not the pretiest, but when all the trim is on it was not seen and worked a charm

In the end cut out a piece of aluminium(sp) stuck it on to the dash with some windscreen sealant (the black super sticky stuff) bout 5 mm around the shifter plate, piece of sound deadening from the floor of a celica i have sitting round, and shes right :D

I take it know one has any idea on the wiring problems? Or the miss?
