DIY Car Interior

Postby GGnz » Mon Nov 21, 2005 12:21 pm

Hey, done a search on here and on the net but couldn't really find anything.

Anyways I'm thinking about doing a custom interior job. Just wondering whats involved. I heard that you just get the vinyl, carpet, cut it to shape and glue where necessary. Does anyone know whats involved and how to do it?

Any help would be awesome.

hey man, im doing pretty much the same thing:
You will need paint-obviously because some things cant be re-trimmed, but get the paint after you have got all the material trimming done so you can get it colour matched. Headlining is pretty easy, just got to find the right glue (not ados F2, i used it and headlining has sunk so im gnna have another go). Depending on door shape, they can be a biatch, my ee80's were pretty flat so it was just a matter of placing fabric over the existing stuff and glueing down. Most of it is painting, so if you got a compressor and guns you should be sweet, just make sure you primer everything. I would suggest getting your seats done professionally, or get some buckets i got 2 for $450. But good luck anyways piks up when u finished

Sweet as. Will have to find the material. Any recommendations on a decent place for the material? My dad use to be a car painter so he's got spray guns, air guns etc in his shed (oh and a compressor) so pretty much got all the tools. Hopefully he might be able to help me (although he keeps telling me hes retired from that lol)

i got blue and white vinyl (well its more of a cream than white) i found that out when i didnt get the white paint colour matched  . I think Spotlight is where i got mine from its like $16 a metre and get some GOOD glue im sure they will have some. Also dont paint the material part of your dash, i found out this the hard way, i painted it and it looked mint az but i think the heat and a little bif of movement cracked the paint all down the bottom so im going to have to rip it out again and recover it

spotlight have white, brown, red or black

If your looking for other colours and wanna go directly to the company, give highland distributors a call (they in chch or dunedin from memory) tis about $30-45ish depending on what you want and how much. better than $65-80 a metre here thru a company.

The white looks wicked. What paint did you use?

Mucking around with the cars interior de-values it come resell time.
Unless is is done correctly.
20v_rollaboy looks to have done a good job, heres hoping it lasts!

But i think you should do a full kit out like the above pictures, as just painting inserts around the vents and speedo etc with some white paint of whatever looks very very tacky.

I'd like to see someone paint their dash etc, except not in such a 'loud' colour....

Every time I see someone do this, it is either bright white, or green, or something....
Which would drive me insane. :?

Repainted a gunmetal colour or something would look good I think, something not too far from factory, but shinier. :)
