Body filler

Hi guys just wondering which is the best stuff to use for the two steps

1 . getting the rough shape+filling up gaps

2. for getting a nice smooth surface

i have used the stuff in the orangish tine from repco etc the one with metal particles in it will the be the best for the first step and then sand back down and then a smoother one with out metal particles in it for the top coat?

also
has any one used this stuff? is it any good

The metal fill/fibre stuff is generally good for filling gaps, but you really want to either underfill or cut it back while cheesy as its prety solid stuff to sand. Another option for filling bigger gaps is fibreglass, which ive used for kits in the past. (obvously another option being weld/replace if we are talking about a problem area)
The smoother stuff, generic bog, comes in many different qualities, from the standard stuff like you have linked (available at placemakers and hardware stores) & the stuff repco sells, to a higher quality lighter body fill many shops use. you can get that kind of thing from a paint specalist, but it does cost a little more.

Personally, if its anything bigger than a 20c piece I perfer to weld the gap (if a repair), then just use standard smooth filler. a small hole, I put a glass patch behind then use smooth filler. Not really a big fan of the fibre/metal stuff.

well its going to be used to go over the top of fiberglass to get a nice smooth finish

and my idea was to use the metal one to give it a little more strength and then the top smoother stuff to give it the nice finish after sanding

what are some good brands too look out for ?

the glass 'should' be strong enough by itself really. As stated, im not a fan of the metal stuff and it will take ages longer to get a good finish.

remember you want to keep the depth of the filler as little as possible so as it does not crack.

cant recall brand names myself sorry. all the standard ones that say they are designed for cars are pretty much the same & ive never had issues with them. The better stuff is just a bit lighter, which can be good if lots is used.
