Gearbox knocking?

Postby Fred » Thu Dec 01, 2005 10:50 pm

Got two ae92's both having similar problem.
rotational knocking
only happens when car is in gear and happens when no throttle or slow accelaration.
Sound goes away when clutch is in.
Happens on the straight.

Could be CV's. Especially if the noise increases as the car goes on axle stands. The CV angle increases and any noise will additionally increase. You can check this simply by putting the steering on lock and driving slowly in a circle. The noise should change in frequency or get louder if its CV's. Ensure you check the other lock.
Diffs will generally whine or produce a random clicking noise. Gearbox synchros will generally fail before teeth, so you'll have problems engaging before you have problems with gear failure.

Hey Fred,

Had the exact same problem in mine, with those symptoms in the same conditions.

Ended up being the inner CV. When my mech checked it, there was NO grease in it all all, and the bearings had gone blue. So I got it reconditioned and the noise has gone now.

Although I have heard instances where ppl have had the same problem, and had their inners done and the noise hasn't gone away

Yeah get the inner CV on whatever side is giving you the noise checked out. Take the boot off make sure theres plenty of grease in there and inspect it for discolouration. Chances are if that it is only just started the knocking then it is probably alright, if theres no grease in there that is
