Vvt pulley, after alarm install?

Postby Lazyluka » Wed Dec 07, 2005 9:51 pm

Hey guys, im new here, I recently bought a AE111 BZR, ive read through a couple of threads as im concerned with the "ticking" sound at idling and at speed. I know this has probably been coverd before, id just like to check.

I think its the VVT pulley, but i am inexperienced so i may be passing judgment before i actually know what it is. However when i bought the car it wasnt making the sound, the car had a recent oil change etc and the cambelt was done 10K ago, the sound started only yesterday after a short thrash, funny thing is, i thrashed it monday, nothing, yesterday i get an alarm installed, thrash it and then starts the ticking.

Is VVT pulley a big deal? like will it damage my engine if i dont have it replaced or can i just live with it and get used to the ticking? Is there a power reduction if it isnt replaced?

Is it possible that the alarm has something to do with it?

Thanks

i doubt the alarm has anything to do with it.

the VVT pully is quite a nasty knock..... have a look in the FAQ section...

as a matter of interest, was the tensioner replaced when the belt was done?

To be honest i dont know, it looks like the cambelt was replaced in japan, not in NZ, then the car was imported and im the second NZ owner, it was fine when i bought it.

So does it damage the engine if left unfixed? And does it do annything to the fuel consumption?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 91

hope they didnt put their foot down X_X.

or hopfully the timing has been retarded... did it feel like a boost in power when you changed to 96? (maybe had a bit of 91 in there, then droped 96 in and noticed a boost?) btw, run it on 98, MINIMUM.

Lazy ... use 98 if you can. Blacktops prefer it to 96 :P

The ticking is normal for a 20 valve (to a degree anyway). I notice that when I change the oil in mine, it goes quiet for an hour or so, then comes back (have changed the oil twice since I bought the car). What grade of oil are you using?

Just bought the car 3 days ago, was silent then, thrashed it since then noise developed, yeah i think im just overeacting a bit it is my first fuel injected car and all.

But what happens (apart from the noise) when the VVT Pulley goes.. Does it increase fuel consumption? Reduce Power? Increase engine wear?
What exactly is a VVT pulley? :?

I know youre gonna say look it up, but i cant find it, ive been looking for it for ages..

Thanks for all the help, ill just drive to a meet one day to get the noise questions answered.

Ol bill sherwoods site hasnt been pointed out recently

so here ya go:

http://www.billzilla.org/vvtvtec.htm

oh and just so you know, theres only 1 type of VVT (not 3 as he describes)

its load dependant, basically put your foot down, and it will come on... dont, and it wont :D
