I'm keen to go up but lack of money says that I either need a ride or need to take some paying passengers, I figure it'll cost ~$450 each way in gas and ferry, and it would be being divided evenly(ish).

Only 2 of us went up for our club megameet in oct and this is just a drag day...Being just after Christmas holidays + expensive tickets due to short advance booking I doubt you'll get much interest.
